Suggestions - Idaho - Montana - 5 days?

Hi - going to be in seattle for business next week - dh in spokane. had planned to visit the sjislands - only now the forecast is for rain the entire trip.

Now thinking that a night or 2 in the coeur d'alene resort might be nice. then what.......

Welcome any suggestions for a nice itinerary for the area.

we are a well traveled couple traveling without kids - only not up to hiking this trip.

maybe a combination of idaho and northern montana? or idaho and gnp.

thanks in advance!

What kind of scenery do you like?

You could do a nice loop heading east on I-90 into Montana, head north at St. Regis to Glacier, then return via Highway 2 through Sandpoint.

Have not been to GNP but we have skied at Whitefish and love it there. Also love Sandpoint. Hopefully the weather will stay nice for you.

Coeur d'Alene and the lake is beautiful. You will enjoy it. Our friends originally owned the CDA resort and it has grown from a small hotel into what it is today. Conde Nast said it was the to Mainland resort in the USA.

Also, Leavenworth, Washington might be interesting.

Glacier is beautiful but personally, I would not recommend it unless you had some time otherwise it is a long drive to and through the park.

Regarding Glacier--the Going to the Sun Road closes to through traffic on Monday (Sept. 15). You cannot drive through the park from one side to the other. You can drive around the south end on Highway 2 to reach the east side of the park, and you can drive from St. Mary up and over Logan Pass as far as "the Big Bend". So you can still enjoy the majority of this spectacular drive.

The Many Glacier area was gorgeous when we were there 2 weeks ago and probably is more so now, with the fall colors coming on.

Our drive from Seattle was about 9 hours so from Coeur d'Alene should be about half that. This was to West Glacier.
