Suggestions for mid-America long weekend destination
Hi-
I am getting the travel jones again and want to start planning a autumn trip with 3 friends (all women in our early 30's). Two come from Oklahoma, one from Atlanta, and I'm from Detroit. We have two yearly trips--Spring is always New Orleans, and the Fall trip varies. We've been to Savannah, Saugatuck, and Mobile, AL. We like shopping, spa-ing, dining, drinking and (sometimes) hitting the nightclubs to dance.
I would love some suggestions about where to go this fall. Chicago comes to mind, but we've all been there before, ditto New York City and Dallas. Because this is usually just a long weekend, we'd prefer to avoid travel west of OK. Suggestions for some lesser-known travel destinations would be appreciated.

Don't know what airfare is like these days, but I've heard a lot of good things about Burlington, VT or Lake Placid,NY.A little different than your Spring Fling but at a time between leaf season and the snow sport season, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Try Kansas City. Stay at the Fairmont on the Plaza...tons of shopping, dining, bars, etc. Go to Westport one nite for the clubbing sceen. If you pick the right weekend, you can do a Chiefs game as well. It's drivable from OK, and a cheap and direct flight from everywhere else.

I'll second Hot Springs, Arkansas. Delightful artists town; the Documentary Film Festival runs Oct 22-31; the gorgeous fall color in the Ouachita Mountains is usually best the last two weeks of October. Check with the convention bureau for what's going on--there's always a lot. You could also drive up into the northern part of the state to Eureka Springs.
