Sugar-Free Gourmet Chocolate Recommendations? Thanks!

Good morning!

Im looking to have some sugar-free gourmet chocolate sent to my mom for her birthday!! Yummy!

I was wondering if anyone has come across any really nice brands of chocolate in their travels? Or maybe anyone who has had a good experience with a particular candy company? I was hoping for something exciting and special, like not Godiva, Ghirardelli, Lindt only b/c these brands seem more easily accessible.

I did a few searches on the internet but I dont have any way of knowing whether one company is any better than the other??

Thanks in advance for anyone who is able to provide some suggestions!

Have a great day!

Hi Naturegirl,

I used to work at a health food store and know there are several upscale brands that sell sugar-free chocolate, but sadly, I can't remember the names of them right now! The only one I can think of is Sunspire (grain-sweetened chocolate) - here's a link:

If you have a health food store close by, go in and see what they have to offer. Most natural food companies will allow you to buy their products directly from them - usually by the case though - or maybe the health food store will special order for you. Good luck!

Does putting the word "travel" in one's post magically make the post "travel related"??

I don't think so.

If your mother is diabetic, she does not need sugar free chocolate because it is not truly sugar free. I got caught by that description, too. Next time you find some, look at the carb count as carbs are what diabetics need to limit. I bought some sugar free 'turtles' and was flabbergasted when I discovered that each of them had 46 carbs, a little more than 1/3 of a suggested daily limit for a diabetic. Please understand, I am not trying to minimize or criticize your well-intended effort to do something nice for your mother. She is blessed to have someone who cares so much!

Sugarfree chocolate is a laxative. Be sure she knows that and doesn't pig out on it, or she'll think you were trying to poison her!

Products with Maltitol, a common sugar subsitute, can cause diarrhea - try to avoid this ingredient if you can. The malt barley and other natural substitutes usually won't cause any side effects in most people.

Um, RB, Naturegirl did NOT put the word travel in her post so I'm not sure why you clicked on - just to be difficult, I suppose. Sounds like you're having a cranky day - how about eating some maltitol-laced chocolate, dear?

Travel addict: Hello! Thank you for that link (and for the great explanation of the Orca post)! It has spawned lots of other choices as well!

Pollyvw: Hello! Thanks for the info-to be honest I did not know that about the carbs!? My mom does not a lot of sweets but every now and then she allows for a (very) small goodie.

I sincerely appreciate the helpful feedback you guys were able to provide me!

Orca: Thanks for the tip-hopefully you didnt have to learn that first hand!! Ew!

rb_travelerxATyahoo: Whoa, settle down there, tough guy, haha! I was thinking maybe someone has come across a neat chocolate shop tucked away in the south of France (or wherever!) and I could check out the website or something, thats all. Otherwise, I was hoping someone might be able to recommend a candy brand or provide some suggestions in general pertaining to the topic-as travel addict and pollyvw kindly did (thanks again you two)!

Im certainly not here to upset anyone! Lets just keep it fun and friendly, ok! Have a great day all!

Naturegirl, if your mom can handle a little sugar, she might like Chocolove bars. www.chocolove.com They use organic dark chocolate (which is actually good for you!) but have some sugar. If you can't order off the web site, they're sold in health food stores. My favorite is the 65% bar - not too bitter and not too sweet, just perfect!

I know this is a pretty narrow topic but I thought Id update it in the hopes it might be useful to others in the future!

I looked for a health food-based company (thanks travel addict), that provided sugar free and low carb chocolate (thanks pollyvw), not sweetened with maltitol (thanks orca and travel addict)!

I ordered chocolate truffles from a company called Indulgence located in San Diego, CA.

https://www.indulgencebakery.com

Hopefully they will be yummy!!

Thanks again for the great suggestions!

Yep. Learned the hard way.

Thanks to this post, though, I can have sugarfree chocolate again, so long as I know the ingredients...

Actually, there are number of sugar alcohol -- they end in "ol" -- that have the same laxative effect on many folks. { e.g. Mannitol, Sorbitol, Xylitol etc} So, be careful!

Hope this helps...
