Stressed/Stumped for Hubby's Birthday - HELP!
So, I've put myself in a bind. I've done REALLY good birthdays for dh in the past, so of course he expects them - and he should. In fact, I asked what he wanted for his birthday, he said a weekend trip - and for me to pick it b/c "I do birthdays so well" - well, I'm stumped! And I really want to do it right for this birthday b/c (1) it's his 35th, a milestone I think; and (2) he's done a lot of wonderful, important things this year so he deserves it.
Problem is, I'm stumped - BIG TIME. And it's starting to stress me out. In the past, I've done 2 surprise parties - and he's been surprised BIG TIME; trips to Montreal, NYC, last year, a wine dinner and overnight in Deerfield Inn and also got a computer, I just gave him a engraved bracelet, for Christmas was a surprise trip to universal.
so, now I'm at a "level" that it needs to be good!
I've thought of tix to see Billy Joel - all sold out (except the horrible prices of tix in "Hostage" as I like to call it; Coldplay - same; Tried for Montreal Canadiens (hockey) - same.
any suggestions? I'm in the albany area of NY if there are any suggestions. thanks!

Well, for starters, how about checking around to your favorite special occasion restaurants (in town, out of town). If they do private parties, see if they will do a private "party" for two. A separate room, flowers, champagne waiting, pick the menu ahead of time (or not), have separate wait staff. Basically take everything (at an already special occasion place) to the next level. I did this for my husband for his 40th, on a private beautiful patio at one of our best restaurants (it was August). The owner didn't even charge me for the "room" since no one else had booked it. It was very romantic and unexpected.

Well if you're in Albany, how about a weekend in Boston? If he's a sports fan you could get tickets to a Celtics or Bruins game. If you wait until April you could get tix to the Sox. If not, there's plenty of other things to do. Nine Zero is a fabulous new-ish boutique hotel, check their web site as they often have nice weekend "special occassion" packages.

Just a thought: I'm not sure if this is something he'd like...but right now it seems with all the stress you're under that you could sure use some of the services at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA. All sorts of spa services, health and fitness, sports, meals, etc. And they'll pick up at the Albany train station or airport. Or there are other spas you could go to as well. He's done a lot this year? Keep him healthy for the next 35.

I have one of those husbands. Hard to surprise, but deserves the best. I would pick a romantic Inn or B&B is Charleston or Natchez Miss- someplace warmer than NY but without Spring Break students. Now, more importanr, buy a copy of "101 Nights of Grrreat Sex" by Laura Corn. Amazon has it for 20 bucks. Give it to him before you go, and rip out a couple of pages to let him know you're already working on a surprise. Then, go to www.kamasutra.com and order one of those kits with the oils, edible dusting powder and feathers in it, lol. Heck, he won't care if he's in a Red Roof Inn in Cleveland. Have FUN.. (why do you think we travel so much?) ;-)
