Stop off between Boston and Bar Harbor
I need suggestions for somewhere to stop off for one night to break the drive between Boston and Bar Harbor. Any ideas ??
Also, how long should it take to drive from Boston to Bar Harbor ? The reason for not doing the journey in one go is that we won't be leaving Boston until after lunchtime.
Thanks

Agreed, it is a five hour drive, and definitely doable in one day, even leaving after lunch.
If you really want to break up the drive, I suppose Augusta may be about 1/2 way there. I have never actually stopped in Augusta, besides for the odd meal or gas fill-up, so I can't help you out with any suggestions there.
Have fun - I love the Bar Harbor area!

I would suggest that you stop off in Freeport, Maine, if you're any kind of a shopper. There's the original LL Bean store, as well as an outlet. The town is filled with outlet shops and is easy walking. We stop every time we're in Maine.

It's 5 hours via I-95 and the Maine Turnpike. But longer if you want to follow the coast on US1 from Brunswick.
You can consider overnighting in a coastal town like Boothbay Harbor, or Rockport/Camden, before arriving at Bar Harbor next morning.

The Old Port District of Portland is worth a look-see. It has really changed for the better in recent years - lots of boutiques and restaurants. It is just under 2 hours from Boston so you will have another 3 hours to Bar Harbor.

I agree with above posters. Portland, Boothbay Harbor or Camden are perfect places to spend a night. Portland has great restaurants, pubs, shopping & art museum. Boothbar Harbor & Camden are both picture-perfect!
