Stinky "Corpse Flower" about to Bloom at Huntington Library in Pasadena

A rare event. It is expected to bloom in the next few days. As of today, it is almost 6 feet tall. I wish I could go to witness this (and the smell).

Quoting from the above website:

Native to the equatorial rain forests of Sumatra, the Amorphophallus titanum, or Titan Arum, can reach more than 6 feet in height when it blooms, opening to a diameter of 3–4 feet. But the plant is perhaps most famous—or infamous—for its exceptionally foul odor. Hence the nickname, Corpse Flower.

... blooms are extremely rare. To date, only about 50 flowerings have been recorded in the United States. The 1999 bloom at The Huntington was the first ever documented in California.

I hope the locals in LA won't miss this!

I saw it a few years ago at the NY Botanical garden. Not sure if it was the same exact plant, but definitely was tall and stinky.

BY the way, I saw it behind closed glass. Only the scientists of stink were in there looking at it.

Love the link, look about 2/3 of the way down the page where the hours admission policy is and look at the face on the kid in the picture! His face says it all " P U" !

I can't imagine how badly that must smell. Ever smell a ripe durian or eat one? The smell is awful;they are banned in many public places. The taste is said to be divine.

I have smelled durian many times (in fact, a bakery shop in Chinatown will make you a durian cake on order), and while it's unpleasant, it's not anything like rotten meat/dead animal.

Someone from the Huntington was interviewed on Today's Science Friday radio show. She described the smell in that interview (she was there for the 2002 bloom), click on link for more: http://www.sciencefriday.com/program/archives/200906124

It sounds like the one at Huntington can be viewed/smelled up close and personal.

Very interesting! My Mom has a cactus, Stapelia, and it produces an ugly, hairy, and very stinky flower, but it's closer to 6 inches than 6 feet. I can't imagine what this monster must smell like!

For those smellers in the Nutmeg State, they have one at the UConn greenhouse. Not sure of its date of consummation.

DebitNM,

I had durian in Thailand. To me it tasted like a cross between onions and mercaptans (the natural gas odor chemicals).

I was told eat it three times and you are hooked, but once was enough for me!

It's so cute. They suggest giving one as a father's day gift. Maybe for your ex! It's so cute!

They serve durian ice cream in a Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle. We were warned it is an "acquired taste" by the server. My BIL had tried it before and said he hadn't acquire the taste so we passed on it. Thank goodness. I'm still working on acquiring a taste for the fish sauce.

Thank you for posting this. Wish we could see this flower. We toured the Huntington Libary in March. What a great place.

Love the Huntington Library! My brother used to teach at a nearby San Marino boarding school. I'd go explore while he was at work...
