Steamboat Springs or Beaver Creek area? VRBO? Resort/Ranch

Planning a trip to Colorado in August. In looking at all the posts, it seems like we might like Steamboat or the Beaver Creek area. Although we want to visit RMNP, I don't believe we're interested in staying in Estes Park. Planning to stay about a week, but would like to do a combo of lodging. Maybe a cabin for 2-3 nights, a ranch/resort atmosphere for a couple of nights and maybe a night or two in Colorado Springs or Denver. We've even tossed around the idea of tent camping for a night or two - just to experience Colorado in another way. I've scanned VRBO but it's overwhelming on what neighborhoods to look into. I saw a good referral to one on Fodors, but good news travels fast and they are booked during our time frame. Also interested in a float trip. If anyone has some good specifics on lodging or rental units (and even an opinion on camping - BEARS?! don't laugh!). Would enjoy any comments while I"m planning. Thanks! This is family travel - and like to keep lodging below $200/night generally.

If you're considering a move, why not do both places? They are about 2 1/2 hours apart. Many people tent camp in the area but the thing that makes it unattractive to me is the likelihood of afternoon rain showers. It's not enough to ruin your time in the mountains but I hate wet camping gear.

Now that you mention it, I think I did read about rain showers in the hot summer months. We are definitely ONLY fair-weather campers....can't imagine driving around with a load of wet tents and sleeping bags. yuck! Thank you! I continue to research how best to spend our time. Colorado Springs, Boulder & Denver have so much, too. I read where Boulder has a lot of bike paths throughout the area. A tour of the Mint would be interesting in Denver, and the Olympic Training complex might be interesting to see, too. So many possibilities.

If you like the idea of bicycling, check out Summit County. There are miles and miles of bike trails; paved and off road. You could rent a condo or cabin in Frisco, Dillon, Breckenridge or Keystone.

don't know what a VRBO is but were at Steamboat Springs during the ski season. I thought it would be a fantastic place to return to in the summer months. More to do in the summer than the winter even! Fantastic countryside and very friendly atmosphere.
