Has anyone been to this restaurant lately?
Interested in opinions on it or better restaurants in this general area...

Were there about 18 months ago. It's okay, nothing special. Be prepared for a long wait on a weekend.

It's OK, as HowardR said, but the restaurants in that general 95/Olde Mystic Village area are typically thought of a tourist traps. The nearby Go Fish in the Village area is owned by the same restaurateur group as the Setak Loft. What exactly are you looking for fodd-wise? Price range? How far are you willing to drive, assuming this area will be your home base?

Ah - that's easy. Grab a map and head to nearby Stonington Borough, about a ten minute or less drive. If you take 27 South from the Mystic (Steak Loft) exit it will dead-end at Route 1. Turn left on 1 and go a few miles until you see the sign for the Borough and turn right at a gas station. Make sure you turn left on 1A and cross the acqueduct, and it will dead end you at Water street. Turn left.

Boom is supposed to have excellent seafood (disclosure: have yet to go myself), and Noah's is quite popular with locals and business types (their shrimp dishes are quite good, and they make their own malted milk balls for a dessert option - also to live for caramel ice cream - Conan O'Brien is a regular during summer forays to the RI beaches. My friends have seen him, but I have not.) My personal favorite for fresh, top-notch food is the Water Street cafe on, naturally, Water street in the borough. If he's got anything duck or scallop-related on the menu, get it. You won't be disappointed.

If you want to stay in Mystic, the Flood Tide is old-school classy, complete with tableside Caesar salad for $13 pp if you want. Nice views of the water, quite good expense-account type food, attentive but unobtrusive service, but they need to do something about their drop ceiling. Takes away from the ambience a bit.

Then there's always the nicer restaurants at the casinos... hope this helps. Have a great trip!

It's been years, but I had stuffed sole at the Steak Loft that was wonderful. It was so good that I called when I got home to see if I could get the recipe. The very nice chef gave me the ingredients but said he wasn't able to cut down the quantities for me. I tried to make it, but mine wasn't nearly as good.
