The train will cost about $32 per day for the 4 of you. Trains take 15 to 20 minutes depending on time of day. Find out how often the shuttle runs and at what hours (you don;t want to find out it stops at 7 pm and you will have to get a cab when you get back from the city.)

Not sure where you found that rate. I looked at the website and a room for 4 adults (12 and up is adult in NYC) is listed starting at $169 per night. If you found a rate for 4 for only $80 that's fantastic.

However, you need to be aware that the hotel is not near a lot of amenities. You will need to eat dinner in the city before heading back to the hotel. Otherwise you will probably need to rent a car to stay in that area.

Secaucus Junction is a good place to get a train into Manhattan. I would ask the hotel for the hours and schedule of the shuttle. That would be my biggest concern....and how will you get to the hotel from the airport? If the shuttle is convenient then you can take the train from Newark Airport to Secaucus Junction and then the hotel shuttle. If that isn't possible then you are looking at a costly taxi ride.

There is a train direct from Rutherford to New York Penn Station, but it will add to your costs (another $3 or so per person per day each way), but trains don't run very often, and you'll still have to get to the train station from the Sheraton, and trains don't run very often (probably no more than once an hour). The trip requires a change at Secaucus Junction, which is probably why the hotel offers a shuttle there.

Despite what people will tell you here, a lot of folks do this so I know it's possible, but it's draining and means you can't go back to your hotel for a rest, even if you're in town for 12 or more hours. And if you ever had to take a taxi, the cost would be over $100. And trains are very crowded during the morning rush hour. Take all of this into consideration, and you may find this doable. But it's not easy nor cheap.
