Springfield, Illinois

I thought I posted this earlier but it didn't come up so here goes again. Our plans upon completing a visit to St Louis, MO was to drive via Hannibal, MO & Springfield, IL to Chicago to catch our flight home. I have since seen only negatives on Springfield on the web so I am wondering whether Springfield deserves a stop for maybe half a day or so. We thought a visit to Lincoln's Home & the cemetery where he & family is buried would be worthwhile. Is it as bad as I have been reading? I am thinking of changing my routing to go via Madison County, IA (covered bridges, etc.) however it will add a few more miles than I planned but I want to get the most out of this road trip. Any comments please? Thanks.

Just an FYI - It did come up, and got a response. Unfortunately, this board moves very quickly, so it's most likely fallen to the second or third page. But, you can always find all of your posts easily by clicking on your name in the upper left corner, or anywhere else it appears on the page.

As a resident of downstate Illinois, I don't think Springfield is all that bad!! Mind you, I don't go out of my way to go there, but don't mind going when I need to.

But, I think you would enjoy visiting the Lincoln home and cemetary, as well as the town of New Salem, where Lincoln lived and worked in the local "store" before getting into politics. This little town is located north of Springfield on route 97 about a half hour. It's very interesting!

Yes, by all means go to Springfield. The Lincoln Home is very nice. What is even cooler is that just a few blocks away is a huge, fully furnished Frank Lloyd Wright home. Also near by is the old state capitol...lots of Lincoln and Douglas stuff there. I also enjoyed seeing Lincoln's tomb and the old cemetary. My kids were sort of bored by New Salem, although I thought it was neat when I was a kid.

Thank you all. Springfield will be a short stop. I feel better now. And thanks jlm_mi, I didn't know that.

We enjoyed visiting Lincoln's home and the tomb where he is buried. Be sure to rub the nose at the statue of Lincoln's (at his tomb)! You'll notice how shiney it is from everyone doing this. We enjoyed our day at Hannibal also.
