sports store (like decathlon)
Hi,
I'm traveling to California on September, from San Francisco to Las Vegas via Yosemite and Grand Canyon. I'll spend a couple of nights in camping sites, and as I'll fly from Spain, I think it will be better to buy in San Francisco a - non expensive - tent and sleeping bag. Do you know of a big sports store near San Francisco? I'm looking for something similar to the European stores "Decathlon", which have very good prices for a decent quality.
Thank you very much for your answers.

There are many places to buy camping equipment in SF & immediate area.
REI (www.rei.com) is high end chain with the best selection and quality.
Sporting goods stores like Sports Authority (www.sportsauthority.com) often have a good selection, but it can vary from store to store as they focus more on shoes, balls, golf, etc.
Actually, one of the best places to get camping equipment in the US is WalMart. Most stores have a very good selection, and their prices are hard to beat anywhere. If you are looking or a non-expensive tent, etc. that may be your best bet.

You might want to consider renting as it may be cheaper than buying, especially if you don't plan on using the stuff again or don't want to take it back to Spain with you.
REI does rentals, athough you'd have to return it to the same store so if your route is one-way (San Francisco to Las Vegas) that wouldn't work. However, I'm sure you could find outfitters around Yosemite that would do rentals, and I know there are some around the Grand Canyon as well.
Just for an idea of what the prices might be: I rented a tent outside Zion National Park which was $15 for the 1st night and $7.50 for each additional night. They had sleeping bags for $12 the 1st night and $8 each additional night. In your case, a 2 night rental would be under $50, and I doubt you'd find a tent and bag for less than that.

WalMart has 1.8m x 1.5m (2 person) tents for as low as $25. More for larger tents. $50 buys you a nice sized tend. Sleeping bags for about $15.

I'd just go to Wal-Mart (I'm not a WalMart shopper but for a situation like this - the perfect solution)
There are 2 or 3 Wal-Marts right off the freeways on your driving route from San Francisco to Yosemite. You can get everything you need for probably cheaper than renting.
