Splitting time between Maui and Oahu

Splitting time between Maui and Oahu
Those of you that have been to both islands. How would you divide your 12 days and 11 nights between Maui and Oahu, over the Christmas holiday break. Out of those 11 nights, we have reservations in Hana, and I have reservations at the Sheraton in Kanaapali and at the Hilton in Waikiki. I have some overlapping nights at both Maui and Oahu and need to decide which to cancel. Any advice. I have two college aged kids that will be with us.

I have never been to Oahu, so I will top this off for you in hopes that someone will respond.
I have, however, stayed at the Sheraton in Kanapali. Lovely resort, lovely property. Your kids will love it, great huge pool area, and the snorkeling right off your property is wonderful, even if they are college age, I think it will be right up their alley.

Both are wonderful places. The energy of Waikiki will really appeal to the college kids and Maui is just great all the way around.
How about 5 nights Oahu and six nights Maui?
Spend a couple of days driving to other Oahu areas to appreciate the diversity of the island. Honolulu has plenty - especially historical sites - to visit for a day or two as well.

I have us double booked at this point in time on Christmas night. My kids are college aged. They are into water sports, beaches, etc. But of course we will see Pearl Harbor. Thanks for any advise. Are you flying into and out of Honolulu, and taking an interisland flight to Maui?
Which hotels have you booked on each island? 7 days is not a long time for two islands, but you can have fun with just a couple nights in Waikiki and the rest of the time on Maui. Have you ever been to Hawaii before?

And no, we have never been to these parts of Hawaii before. I've been to the Big Island, but my college aged children have never been to Hawaii. They are most interested in snorkeling, body surfing, if it's safe anywhere, hiking, and resting. But they do like action as well. So I think the two islands I chose will suffice. I just don't know how to split the time. If we check out on Christmas day we will be 6 full days in Maui and 5 full days in Oahu, with the day in the middle being for travel between the islands.

I like Oahu the best and would spend more time there. So an extra night on Oahu is a good idea.
One thing you might look into is many Oahu (don't know about the other islands) hotels offer every fifth night free.

lah1120: I wouldn't agonize over whether or not you spend an extra night at one place over the other...they are both great, and you won't lack for 'things to do' at either island! Just choose and go on with your planning! ...We had 7 nights on Maui and 6 on Oahu, and no, it was not enough on EITHER island.
