Split Rock Lodge

I heard the food was better at the Lodge than at the hotel where the food was close to horrible. There's a 17% gratuity tacked on to the room bill. The Lodge looked like it was in a very pleasant area but we visited in April. There's not much around and you will have to pay a toll every time you drive in to the resort area because it's on a private road. The air is probably a better quality at the Lodge because it is smaller. The smell of cigarettes permeates the hotel. There has to be nicer places to vacation in this area.

I had to laugh at Ben Derr's comment about a "month there one weekend" -- but I erroneously assumed his comment was negative! I also was at Split Rock several years ago, and I would not describe it as "on the calmer side." It was pretty crowded (we waited for hours to get a sunfish), and there was a general hubbub. Still, we had a pretty good time, and said we would likely go back. However, when we got home and were well away from Split Rock, we both said, "Nah!" -- and haven't been back since! I guess it depends on what you want from a place, and on individual perspective.
