I did find a $99 room at the Super 8 Motel on Garden Street & I95. I know it isn't anything special, but we just need a room.
We'll drive up, view the launch from a river park (I guess) and spend Sun at Brevard Zoo before heading back south.
How's the Super 8? Where would be head to get a veiw of the launch without going into SC proper.

The Super 8 was a Days Inn. They did some work on it last year. Can't vouch for the rooms, but it looks like your typical chain motel from the highway. I've heard the Mexican restuarant there (Rodeo) is pretty good.
From that location, your best bet is to head east on Garden Street to Sand Point Park by the Indian River. There are a few other smaller parks in the same vicinity, so park the car and wander around a bit. You will have a good view from any spot on the water.
Keeping our fingers crossed for a successful launch!

Kristinesonja, this time of year the earlier in the day you get to the zoo the better. In the heat of the afternoon the animals will very sensibly disappear into any shade they can find. They're much more active and visible in the morning. The newest baby giraffe will probably be out in the exhibit - she's really fun to watch. And if your children are younger, don't miss the zoo's Wildlife Detective Agency building - lots of great stuff inside for kids.
