In the travel section of the "Miami Herald" today they featured travel to Indian country (Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo). I was interested specifically in the Inn at Halon in the Zuni reservation 30 miles south of Gallup, N.M. The article says it's right in the thick of daily village life. Have any of you stayed there...and if so, any comments?

ttt - What about the hogans for bed and breakfast stays that the Navajo families rent out? Have any of you stayed at those? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't stayed on the Zuni reservation but have stayed at Window Rock on the Navajo reservation and on the Hopi reservation.

We stayed at the Navajo Nation Inn. Basic rooms but it was clean and everyone was friendly.

We stayed at the Hopi Cultural Center Motel at Second Mesa on the Hopi reservation. I don't remember having many choices on the Hopi reservation for lodging. The Hopi was more reserved than the Navajo.

We found the Navajo and Hopi to be so different culturally, we've vacationed there twice. Once you know a little about their history, you gain a huge respect for what these people have been through.

If you are traveling in the Indian Country of the SouthWest and the 4Corners the AAA has a map just of that area listing all the places of interest.

Thank you both for your suggesions. Mike, all your photographs were amazing. Having spent a month in the Southwest recently and not seeing much of the Indian culture or people, we were anxious to go back and have a more "in depth" visit. This article in the "Miami Herald" convinced us.

Politically correct term is Native American not Indian

Oops, sorry about that. I guess I'm not politically correct. But "Into the heart of Southwest Indian country" was the title of the piece in the "Miami Herald". Perhaps the best politically correct term should be "First Americans".
