Sonoma to Sacramento-Travel Time ?
How early in the AM does Mr. R5 have to leave to get to a mid-week conference at the Sterling Hotel-needs to be there around 8AM.
Inexpensive parking suggestions also welcomed.

TIA!!

Ick it will be trafficky all right.
I'd rather answer the parking part. There is a parking garage on H between 14th and 15th across from the Sacramento Theater Company. Brew It Up is on the first floor so if the conference is boring...
Anyway it's a quick jaunt down to the Sterling from there.
Weekday Rates (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
$1.50 each half hour for first hour
$1.25 each additional half hour
$14.00 daily maximum charge

Is it really that bad going east before 8am? The bad traffic I see is going westbound in the morning and eastbound in the afternoon. That's through Napa, Jamieson Canyon, Cordelia, Fairfield and Vacaville. Maybe it's bad between Davis and Sac? Don't know for sure.

ah janis & Suzie, just who I was looking for !
So, he is willing to leave at 5-5:30AM or perhaps go up the night before around 7PM-
how would that be ??
and I am sure he will appreciate having an "escape" if the speaker is boring

Now I'm thinking, again, about Pricelining a hotel for a few nights and coming with him....hmmmm.....could visit with you all and the Kal's !!
Never spent any meaningful time up there, shamed to say-what's on your Sacto siteseeing list dear ladies?

We used to go up to Tahoe on Friday mornings leaving at 6am from Napa. We were in Sacramento by 7 and up in Kings Beach by 9:30. We never encountered bad traffic going eastbound in the morning whereas the traffic in the afternoon was horrendous on Fridays.
That was a few years ago but I don't believe it's changed too much. By the way, if you are coming from Sonoma you want to take Hwy 12 through Jamieson Canyon and not go through American Canyon.

Lets just say I-80 gets worse by the month. I was at a meeting last night and a police officer, new to our local PD, was commenting he has never been happier in his life as he no longer has to commute on I-80. When you would rather face criminals than I-80, well what can I say?
Razzle, if your husband doesn't want to leave early in the morning going to Sacramento the evening before would be a good idea. But many people do have that long of a commute daily so it is not like he can't make it to the conference in time but I would allow some extra time in case traffic gets slow due to an accident.

Here's the Sacramento 4* and 3* hotel list from biddingfortravel.com:
4 Star
Hyatt Regency Sacramento
Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel
3 Star
Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza
2 ½ Star
Hawthorn Suites Sacramento
Clarion Hotel Mission Inn
4 Stars were going for $75 to $80 in December. Either is fine.
Go the night before the conference!

The above probably means the Clarion Mansion Inn. It's right across the street from teh old gov'c mansion and right on the corner of 16th and H. This would be a super easy walk to the Sterling.
But next door to that is the fairly new Marriott Courtyard. Same walking distance. The blocks are short.
Best Western Sutter House is on 11th and H so it's 2 blocks down the other direction.
We had a conference at the convention Center. The Sheraton Grand is right next door to the Center. Anyway our designated parking was in the parking garage on 14th and H street that I listed above. It's only 2 blocks to 14th & J street so even the Sheraton would be close.
