Solo in the City

I am a woman and have traveled to NYC many times alone. The city is very safe, but as the previous poster said - don't do anything you wouldn't do in any city. For instance, don't walk down dark deserted streets or empty parks at night, don't get on an empty (or empty except for one man) subway car, don't sling your purse over your shoulder with the open part behind your back, etc. If you feel uncomfortable in a location - move along. There are so many people everywhere that you won't be alone for long!
The thing is to not get into a situation where you become frightened. People who are frightened make errors in judgement. And people who appear to be ill at ease often get harrassed.
I've only felt scared in Manhattan twice - both times in nearly deserted locations after dark. Nothing bad happened, I just got scared and moved quickly to a busier street. I've had scarier encounters in the parking garage by my office here at home!
Enjoy yourself! I love seeing New York by myself - no one to hurry me while shopping or sightseeing. And I can choose whatever restaurant or play that I want.
