Snorkeling in Maui...Equipment

I will be in Maui for the first time in November. I am looking forward to snorkeling. Should I buy my equipment and bring it with me or should I rent them from the hotel. I have no idea what the quality is the hotels provide. I will be at the Kea Lani in Wailea.

I personally would not buy equipment to bring over unless you were planning to get much more use out of them than just this one trip. Snorkel equipment is everywhere. There are places that rent cheaply for the day or for the week. Just check any of the activities brochures at the airport or hotel. Of course all the hotels have snorkel equip and many of them do not charge anything for it. Also any organized snokel day trips provide the equipment as part of the price. I have found the quality is generally pretty good anywhere in Maui.

I suggest investing in your own equipment. You are then always assured of a good fit with your own spit. only drag is its a carry on item cause you can't trust it to airline baggage handlers.

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon in Maui, and I would go on a catamaran that is a snorkeling trip - which supplies the gear. there is no need to bring along the extra stuff - especially with all of the other things you will be bringing.

Another option to bringing it with or renting is to buy it there & then just throw it away before going home if you don't want to use equipment that someone else has used.

One of the best snorkel spots is in front of the Sheraton on Kaanapali Beach. also book a trip on the "Trilogy" a great catamaran with a great crew and they will take you to the crater Molikini.

If nothing else buy your own Snorkel & Mask and be sure to always have a good fit. Diane

My husband and I just got back from Maui and we found the snorkeling @ Ka'anapali Beach-Black Rock VERY LOUSY!!!Not many fish, rough water, and way too crowded. We stayed @ Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, which was great.. A much better place to go is off of Wailea. We stayed @ Reniassance Wailea and the snorkeling was not to be believed!! The reef starts almost as soon as you enter the water.I would recommend purchasing your own equipment...No telling where that rental stuff has been!!!
