There are slots for many levels of play- thousands, upon thousands. There are some which have progressive numbers clicking over their stations. These progressives may have over one million dollar wins possible. Most of the big wins are paid off on maximum lines played. It also takes differing amounts to play each line. I have seen machines with up to 20 payoff lines. If it was a nickel machine that would be 20 x 5 cents for every pull- plus you could play up to x amount of coins per line as well. So you could play 5 coins on each of 9 lines for 45 times x 5 cents (or $2.25) for every pull. That would be maximum play. You lose lots of money quickly.
Therefore, you could play on a $1 machine that is a progressive, $45 on every pull of a 9 line- 5 coin per line machine. But there may be very large payoffs and a smaller payoff may be around $400.
You can always play less but oftentimes that means you do not win the progressive, but not always. All machines have different reads/legends.
Slot machines are always geared for the house to win big.
There are high roller slots for up to $25 or more per line per "coin". There are thousands of quarter slots, nickel slots and some have dime slots. Many machines are multi now and you can change their denomination. 2 cent machines abound at some places.
I've read that the higher the denomination the less percentage for the house. I do not know, but I do know this. Slot players always lose over time. And you can lose very, very quickly.
Electronic poker is a game where the player can occasionally win without the huge lose percentage. But you need to be educated on all these games too,
as some have game features that allow for other wins and some have fewer wins but bigger win amounts.
Machines are paper payoffs now and the coins are mostly a thing of the past except for much older venues who have not changed.
If you want to play slot machines, watch, read and learn. The Strip locations have machines that the locals call "tight". My hair dresser just went to LV and stayed at Sunset Station where the locals play- far from the Strip. She says she will never go back to the Strip again.
Going to Vegas to gamble or to have fun/shows/eat can be two separate things.
I haven't played a slot machine for a couple of years, but have a girlfriend who is a big electronic poker winner. You always play for the 4 of a kind in that game, if given the choices.
And if you are lucky and win right away, walk with the money and don't put it back.
I have been extremely lucky in the Joliet area IL casinos. So I don't want to put it back. Ha-Ha!
Slot machines are based and prey on the human/primate affliction that our brains possess that universally falls for intermediate indeterminate spatially placed rewards in a conditional system. Even monkeys will do it for a small treat until their arms are impaired or until they fall asleep from exhaustion.
So sometimes the most dangerous thing is to win a good reward right away. Each and every play is not connected to the outcome of the play before or after it.
The best odds in LV are on one specific Craps table play, and the in Bacarat and BlackJack you have much slower lose and better possibilities to actually win in the short term.

The payoffs and rules are posted on each machine, just hit the "payoff" button to see what it's possible to win. A machine might say "25c" on it but you don't win the $10,000 prize listed if you only play one quarter.
And how many times have I seen a little old lady walk up to a machine, just wanting to try her luck...she puts $10 into the machine and pushes a button not knowing what the heck she is pushing, next thing she knows she has spent her whole $10 in two spins on a 5c machine and is flabbergasted. READ!

I've heard that's a myth...and it certainly hasn't been lucky for me! (Besides, if you think about lifetime machine percentages and the state gaming commission, they probably couldn't do that, anyway.) However, I've found that the new e-penny machines are a great way to assuage my dismay at the end of the day--at least I'm entertained!

I also heard that the machines at the airport don't pay out, they're just there to take your last $20, $50 or whatever.
I was proven wrong about 2 weeks ago. Put in $10, $0.25 machine with 3 credit bet limit and few minute later hit $1200.
They paid, although it took about 45 minutes to get the paper work done....
so, the machines at the doors, airports myths are just that, myths.....

Wouldn't the carpet NOT be worn if they paid out fast?! (Just looking at casino carpet makes me a little dizzy--nauseous if I've had a couple!)
I think the best advice ever given me about slot machines was "sit as close as you can to where the servers go to fill the drink orders."
