Has anyone done this hike? Will be in Maui in 3 weeks. We would like to drive up early to see the sun rise and then do a hike of some sort into the crater. We are fit, active people and can handle a longer hike. The guide books suggest parking on a lower lot and hitching a ride to the top? I would like to get some suggestions for people who have done the hike into Haleakala Crater.

Stephanie, I've never done the hike you mentioned, but please read the recent post called "WARNING: Haleakala sunrise in Maui." I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're going to have a tough time getting to the summit for the sunrise due to road construction. This work began around May 7 and is expected to take about 3 months, unfortunately. Again, I'm sorry but thought you'd rather know now than after you arrive.

I emailed the staff at the Haleakala National park and they told me that the construction has had no effect on their trails. And depending on when you're going you will be able to get to and park at the summit (we'll be there in July and were told that we'll be fine). Go to www.wizardpub.com and order their Maui revealed book - it's fabulous. They have detailed descriptions of all of the hikes as well.

Hey, don't worry about accessability of Haleakala, there are 2 parking lots at the summit within about 1/4 mile of each other so YES you can still drive up Haleakala. There are other vantage points to see the sunrise. There are other overlooks signposted on the way up to the summit which give equally amazing views. We hiked in and out of Haleakala on Sliding Sands trail -- it's easier going in than out! Take plenty of water, wear sunscreen and take layers. We walked in for about 2 hours and then turned around and came out the same way rather than the one way hike. I think the "one way" hike could take the greater part of the day, a lot of people hike in, stay in a cabin overnight and then hike out the next day.

Remember you will be at 10,000 feet, so thin air and wildly fluctuating temps will be a factor. Ice crystals grow from the volcanic soil in early morning, yet temps within the crater on your hike can beat you down fast. Brink more water than you think you will need, and some energy bars.
No need to worry, though, this is a FANTASTIC, other-worldly experience, and if it appeals to you then it should not be missed.
