Skiing / Arches in March
Skiing The Canyons in late March and will be driving to Moab later in the week. How is the drive? Not knowing the roads Is 191 a good road? I would presume in poor weather avoid it and take I-15/ I-70 am I correct on that? We are flying out of SLC so would like to return via a different route as long as the weather is fine. Arches- is the delicate arch trail doable for a 6 year old? I have seen some u tube videos and the narrow trail on top of the canyon doesn't look any worse than a trail we took in Smoky Mountains. Is slickrock dangerous for kids? Is fiery furnace ranger hike okay for kids? Any recommendations for hiking with children? We will be in Moab for 2 days to visit Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse point. Also, the kids are excited about seeing real dinosaur footprints. Any recommendations? Thanks for your help.

The Utah Dept of Transportation has a good website to get information as to traffic problems/snow etc. My DW and I were on 191 in early November from SLC to Green River and Moab/Arches. US191 is a good highway but you may have to watch out for snowy ice patches. If the weather is poor/snowy you may want to rethink going into Arches. There is a Prehistoric museum in Price that your children would love.
Slickrock is dangerous for everyone if there is some ice on it.
My DW carried a golf seat/cane all the way out to Delicate Arch since she had a knee replacement last spring.
At the visitor center just inside the gate, they can answer your questions about the fiery furnace walk and sign you up.
If the weather is/has been dry, you can see dinosaur tracks.
23 miles north on 191 from the center of Moab take the BLM road to the right-cross the tracks and proceed 2 miles on the dirt road to a parking area with a sign about the dino tracks about 200 yards up the trail. If you have a handheld GPSr, the lat/long is N38 49.900 W109 45.723.
Don't let the children run ahead or lag behind-you try to set the pace. Another museum worth seeing is the John Wesley Powell Museum in Green River next to the river.

Late March can be either balmy or a blizzard, sometimes on the same day! Regardless of the weather, however, US 191 is fine as long as you're sensible about speed, etc. Taking I-15 and I-70 to Moab from Salt Lake takes you WAY out of your way, and adds quite a bit of time to your drive, just FYI. Delicate Arch is great for a 6-year old, and I'd also suggest Morning Glory Arch (in Negro Bill Canyon, off Hway 128 just outside of town to the east) and Corona Arch off the Potash Road west of town. Slickrock is super fun for kids, as long as they have grippy shoes, and as tomfuller said, it's not icy. Enjoy!

The only place that a fall would be really bad is the last 5 minutes of the hike and while at Delicate Arch itself. Definately do it. Also see Double Arch and Landscape Arch- very short and easy hikes(much easier than Delicate and Delicate isn't that bad.
Canyoneering with www.deserthighlights.com is my favorite thing in Moab. I am fairly sure they do tours with 6 years olds. I think deserthighlights has a tour and rappel of Morning Glory Arch, which katy mentions.

With just a couple of days, I would do Delicate ARch. It would be too much for a 6 year old to do that and Fiery Furnace in one day, in my opinion. (My then 4 yo and 7 yo did Delicate Arch last April.)
Canyoneering could be really cold that time of year. I wouldn't do that with a 6 year old, but then I have a low tolerance for whining!!
There is actually a cool museum in Moab that is nice to see for an hour or so in the afternoon if everyone needs some chill time. It is right in town.
In addition to the dino tracks, there is a short trail north of Moab on the WEst side of the road where you can see dinosaur bones in situ. My kids really loved it. Just google dinosaur tracks in Moab and you will see some entries pop up. Another fun thing to do is to get the map at the Moab Visitors Center for a rock art driving tour--just on easy dirt roads etc. My kids liked that as well.
