Skagway options????
We can't decide on which White Pass Railroad trip to take...the shorter up and back, lasting about 3 hours, or the longer Yukon Adventure trip, lasting about 7 hours. Seems like a long trip, but I heard the better scenery is up higher...
We like trains, but we're not historical train fans. We're going for the scenery and and to hear the history of the Gold Rush.
Also, should we consider the train up and bus back....perhaps with a tour company? Any thoughts?
What are the pros and cons of the options above?
Thanks so much,
Sue

Just a thought: we took the short trip and then bicycled back to Skagway (pre-arranged bicycle tour compay who met us at the top with bikes and equipment). I found the best scenery is climbing up out of skagway; once you level out, the scenery (although still wonderful and unusual) tends to be more of the same. I'd opt for the shorter one IMHO.

We took the shorter trip last summer; and it was plenty long. We considered the biking down but were glad we didn't do it because it was rather cold that day (it was June). Several times on the way down we could see the bikers across the ravine ,and we were glad we were on the warm train.
The downfall is that the train returns on the same track, so the scenery is exactly the same. Many people in our car ended up taking naps on the way back.
I imagine the longer trip also returns on the same track. Seven hours is just way too long IMHO.

Another option. Rent a car and drive. There were four of us and we had a wonderful adventure. We drove into the Yukon and back and as it turned out, it was the best decision we could have made for us as there was a landslide that day that cancelled all the railroad trips. Whatever you decide, you will have a great time! We had a drink at the Red Onion before returning to our ship and our DH's loved tipping the wait staff! Dollar's down their fronts!
