Single Trip to Hawaii
Hi I am consindering taking a trip to Hawaii by myself in October. I have never travelled by myself or been to Hawaii. I was considering staying at Hostels as a way to keep costs down a tad bit. I was looking for suggestions on a lttle bit of everything, lodging, areas to stay, things to do. I like history and nature. I am a 27 year old single female. Thanks for all your help.

If you are going to Oahu (Honolulu) Stay at either of the HI Hostels. http://www.hiusa.org/hostels/usa_hostels/hawaii
The Backpackers Hostel might be alright but I am quite sure about the quality of Hosteling International.
Don't know much about the other islands.

I've been to Hawaii solo three trips, I always stay right in Waikiki. I like it because there is good public transportation so no car needed. I don't know the hostel scene (but there is one) because I stay in budget hotels. I think Oahu (the island Honolulu/Waikiki is on) is the most budget friendly.
The first thing about a first trip to hawaii you need to research and decide is which island(s) you want to go to.

Will you be renting a car? You need one on all islands except Oahu and even there you probably want one for at least a day to visit the east and north shores.
Went solo to Kauai in 2009 and had a good time, met up with some folks from another forum several times for lunch and drinks.

I'm no expert but besides being the only island it's practical to get around on public transportation, I'm pretty sure that Waikiki area on Oahu has the most hostel-type accomodations available.

October is a great month to come to Hawaii.
There is a whole block of hostels at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. They are 1 block from the beach and a half block from the Zoo. There are lots of places to walk to in that area when you get tired of the beach. Waikiki is pretty safe for walking at most hours of the night, as there are lots of people about. You can also walk up Kapahulu Avenue to the many restaurants there.
There is good bus transportation. You can catch buses from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, downtown Honolulu & Chinatown and the airport ( a loooong ride).
