single, and 81 in Hawaii

I am looking for a place for my 81 year old Dad to stay preferably on Maui where there are other seniors around to hang out with. He is fairly acitve, a little memory loss but who cares what day of the week it is....He needs a place with people around.
any suggestions?
thanks,
Lynn

How do you plan on him being able to travel solo if he can't remember what day of the week it is? How's he going to remember his airline? hotel? day to come home?

We have noticed that all the Marriots on any of the islands seem to have a lot of elderly folks. It may be because they get the AARP rate.

Excellent care facilities on Oahu. The two that come to mind are Pohainani (sp)(sounds like Pohinoni) independent living with some assisted care in Kaneohe. The location is beautiful. There is one other and the name escapes me. It is also on Oahu though and in Honolulu. If you go online you can find other care options.
Arcadia that is the name.

I know you said that you were looking for Maui but perhaps these institutions can tell you where to look for other locations. Because the islands are so small reputations happen easily. If you find out about a facility you can ask around and people will tell you if it has a good or bad rap.

You just want to be leary of family run care homes. There are a lot of people that set up a care home to earn the mortgage and give substandard care. The state shuts these places down all the time. An elderly person in one of these homes might find him/herself living with children, or in other poor conditions.

I worked in a small care home on Oahu for minimal assisted elderly. It was only short term residence for elderly recovering from an illness for the most part but it gave me an introduction into the industry.

I also think you should top this post when people are likely to see it in Hawaii.
