Rattlesnake Burgers on Oahu?

The real icee came home today telling me that we are supposed to go somewhere near the pipeline for the best rattlesnake burgers ever...Or at least the best burgers and cold beer..

Are the people at work yanking his chain?

Why Oahu? I never heard of rattlers there. I would think you would find rattler meat where there are rattlers, i.e. the Southwest. Sounds weird, like pulling your chain weird.

That was my reply to him, jacketwatch!

Geez, I don't want to be "country come to town" asking for rattlesnake burgers when it's a hoax!!

I read in the Blue Book that there are no snakes in Hawaii, and if you see one, to kill it immediately, so as to prevent infestation. (I duhno...gt;)Belle.

Well, this post/thread should certainly help Hawaii tourism. Oh yeah, everybone wants to run across a rattler on vacation.

Hi Gene LOL. Iceeu2, I am certainly not an expert but my understand has always been there are no snakes on any of the Hawaiin Islands. Hope I am right! I think your DH coworkers were pulling his leg. But perhaps some here on Fodors that lives in Hawaii can address this situation with more concise information. Anyway, go and have a wonderful time!

What? No snakes? How about snipes? I've always wanted to go on a snipe hunt.

When we lived in Hawaii, there were no snakes on the islands.
How big can a snake burger be anyway?

I'm sure Pake PorkChop will know if you can get snake burgers. Maybe at Kua Aina? Don't they sell buffalo burgers?

We don't have snakes in hawaii, unless you count the little hawaiian snake, which looks exactly like an earthworm.

We don't typically have snakes, but there have been hitchhikers (brown tree snakes) coming over from Guam before.

I believe it's a huge concern as these snakes eat our native birds.

I don't know how common these hitchhikers are - I've heard they have pretty strict inspections to prevent this.

And let's not forget the occasional boa constrictor placed in the amnesty box at the airport.

I agree Kau Aina might be a thought of someplace that sells snake burgers.

iceeu2,

Someone is definitely yanking your chain.

1. No rattlers in Hawaii (execpt for the odd pet or two)
2. Rattlesnake meat--if they had any--is really quite expensive.
3. Sufficient rattlesnake meat to make one burger (if they even exist anywhere) would probably put the burger in the $50 - $100 price range.

Now, Hawaiian fried tarantula on a stick is another story...yum!

I'm sure there's got to be a burger and cold beer place somewhere near the "pipeline."

Check it out for us?

Al LaCarte: I don't know if they have "snake burgers", but you're best bet would be at the Opp, AL Rattlesnake Rodeo...I can't remember the time of year...I think in the Fall. They probably have info on the web if you do a search.

They sell all kinds of snakeskin products, and yes, they eat it! I've never been ( and don't plan to go either!!!). Belle

Also, rattlers often get 6' or more, so I believe obtaining enough meat (for a burger) is very "do"-able! Belle

Now, I remember having rattlesnake as one of our appetizers one time when we were in Phoenix.

And, we have rattlers and copperheads here in our neck of the woods...so, I guess I will ask it this way....

What's a grass shack place up near the pipeline that has great burgers and cold beer? Forget the snake filling!!

iceeu2: I had rattlesnake once at a fancy Washington DC restaurant.

You ain't missing anything. Rattlesnake tastes just like chicken. As does Caribbean turtle.

Now fried tarantula and scorpion shish kebab - those are different!

My relatives on Hawaii are upset about the stowaway snakes - they'll be more than happy to turn them into burgers!

OSB,

While I have had rattlesnake meat a couple of times, I'm really not that fond of it. I realize it's available; however, my point was simply that it's rather expensive. An ounce in a restaurant generally goes for about $10-$15 and if you multiply that by enough to make an 8 ounce burger...you get the idea.

Thanks for the info, though.

Maybe they were referring to a place with "rattlesnake" in its name-- Rattlesnake Grill, etc. We had a place by that name in Denver for awhile.
I sure hope that dreaded brown snake doesn't get a foothold in Hawaii. It has completely devastated other environments and totally wiped out entire bird populations. I don't think it has any predators and it multiplies quickly. Supposed to be pretty vicious to people, too. I know they get into the undercarriage of planes so they are supposed to check very carefully at airports.

MaureenB,

I didn't realize you were a Denverite! Small world.

You're probably right about the "Rattlesnake" being in the title--too funny that the posting went in other directions. Occams Razor.

True about the Brown Tree Snake. I used to live on the island of Saipan and great precautions were taken to ensure that what happened to Guam (no more birds) doesn't happen to Saipan. If there was even a rumor of a sighting, they literally beat down or burned the brush in an attempt to find and kill any browns.
