Short trips from NYC area for XMas?
Hi everyone, I just found this forum and it seems like a great place to get travel ideas!
Anyone have any good ideas for a nice getaway for Christmas? My husband and I have no family in the NY area (we actually live in Long Island), and would like to go somewhere cozy and charming. Must be within driving distance since I am pregnant and do not want to fly.
Thank you!

Clearly you aren't a local if you are living "in Long Island" as opposed to "on Long Island". Welcome to the neighborhood (I grew up in Oceanside).
As for places to go that are driving distance, some of that will depend on exactly where on LI you are - Bellport will be at least an hour past Massepequa. It will also depend on how long you can stand to be in the car - I managed a 7 hour drive in one day when I was almost 8 months pregnant - we just had to stop every 90 minutes or so. And for what it's worth, I flew until I was about 32 weeks (which is when my doc recommended I stop).
Look at places like the Berkshires. It's about a 3 hour drive from NYC and there are a lot of options like Williamstown - the College will be on winter break, so the town will be quiet, but the Museums will be open and it's beautiful. Or, if you really want to be indulgent, go to Canyon Ranch in Lenox for a few days and get pampered.
Have a good time and enjoy this time before Baby arrives.

My favorite cutesy towns:
Nyack, NY (Rockland County)
Piermont, NY (Rockland also, very close to Piermont)
Cold Spring, NY (I've seen some cute B&Bs there, here's a helpful link: http://escapemaker.com/ny/coldspring/coldspring.html )
I just found this place recently, Sugarloaf, NY. This would probably be better when you're not pregnant as it's on the "wine trail" that runs up to/past New Paltz. It's a crafts village, see http://www.sugarloafartsvillage.com/
I'm thinking Cold Spring might be your best bet. It's on the Hudson River, nice scenery, cute shops & restaurants.

How about East Hampton? Great shopping & restaurants. I suggest the Enclave Inn in Wainscott, just west of the village.

All good ideas. I'll add onto Gekko's comment with the Hamptons in general. There are some nice inns (the Enclave is fine but it lacks charm) in both Southampton (A Butlers Manor) and East Hampton (1770 House and the Maidstone Arms).
Also agree with the other locations you've been given. There's more info here if you do a text search for the Berkshires or any of the individual town names. Connecticut is another option. There's a ferry that runs from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport.
