Short trip to Coronado

I flew to SAN from PHX, and my girlfriend flew in from NY. Our flights landed about an hour apart so I shlepped my suitcase to her terminal and waited for her flight to arrive. We then took the SuperShuttle to the Loews Coronado Bay Resort for $16 each (plus tip). The van made a few stops at other hotels on the way, which was fine with us as it gave us a chance to see some other parts of San Diego.

Our room wasn't available for check in when we got to the hotel so we had lunch poolside and looked in the few shops at the hotel. Was able to get into our room about an hour before check in time, walked in, and we were both immediately drawn to the view from our balcony - water, boats, and across the water, the beautiful homes of Coronado Cays.

Dinner was pizza at the Market Cafe in the hotel. Surprisingly it was very good.

We were there for 4 nights. Each of our 3 full days was spent at Silver Strand Beach. The hotel had a golf cart that shuttled us back and forth to the hotel, and also had chairs, umbrellas, towels, and boogie boards available at the beach. The ocean was absolutely freezing, so we went in up to our knees only. It was quite breezy and at times, chilly, on the beach. But it was delightful being there, listening to the ocean, watching the birds, enjoying the sea air. The beach never got very crowded. For our lunches at the beach, we got hot dogs and chips from the bare bones food concession.

For two of our nights, we took the hotel shuttle to downtown Coronado for dinner and to walk around. One meal was at the Coronado Boathouse which was an excellent seafood dinner. For our other downtown dinner, we ate at a Mexican restaurant called Costa Azul, also very good. We also checked out the Hotel Del's shops, lobby and grounds. What an amazing place.

We both loved the Loews. We didn't have a car but the "isolated" location was not a problem. The beach shuttle and shuttle to downtown worked out fine. If we had wanted to do anything other than hang at the beach, and go to downtown Coronado, we would have needed a car, but we knew in advance this vacation was all about R&R and seeing each other. (We've been best friends for over 40 years).

My one complaint about the Loews would be that they don't have enough chairs at the "adult" pool and of course, the kids pools are full of kids! They also don't provide enough chairs and umbrellas at the beach. We got to the beach by 10am every day but we noticed that when people from the hotel arrived in the early afternoon, there were no chairs and umbrellas left for them.

I would sum it up as a wonderful, relaxing four days. And would much rather be back there right now than in this miserable AZ heat!

I am so happy that you had a relaxing and fun time, orangetravecat. It was much needed due to the worry and stress you have had with your beloved family members. Take good care!

Glad you had fun! I love Coronado and have wondered about Loews. We usually stay at the Marriott because we use reward points but I would like to try something new.

orangetravelcat:

I remember your questions when you were planning this getaway with your friend. So glad you had a good time. Thanks for posting the details about Loews.

I would also love to be in San Diego where our son lives and away from this dreadful heat in the Midwest.
