shopping in lancaster and reading
Some friends and I are planning an outlet shopping trip to Lancaster and Reading in November. We will be traveling from the Virginia Beach area and leaving around 2:00. I think it is about a 6 hour drive. Any suggestions as to where we should stay? We will get there late on Thursday night, shopping Friday and Saturday, and then back Sunday. Should we stay in Reading or Lancaster or maybe 1 night in both? Thanks for your help.

If you stay in Reading, there are several nice hotels near the main outlet center, which is the VF Outlet Center in Wyomissing, a suburb of Reading. You can stay at a Sheraton (it has an indoor pool), the Inn at Reading, or something called Country Suites (I can't remember the exact name).
I can give you several excellent restaurant recommendations:
1. The Green Hills Inn--a top French restaurant--ranks in the top ten for the Philadelphia area in the Zagat Guide
2. Judy's on Cherry--excellent New American cuisine in a renovated brewery in downtown Reading
3. Dan's--also excellent New American cuisine in downtown Reading
4.Peanut Bar--excellent bar/restuarant in downtown Reading
5. Canal Street Brewery--another renovated brewery with good food in downtown Reading

The Lancaster outlets are located on Route 30 east. There are several options for accommodations that are located between the two major outlet malls including a Country Inns and Suites and the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center. If you're looking for something a bit more upscale, you could stay at the Strasburg Inn which is located about five miles south of Route 30. (www.historicstrasburginn.com) For a more unique shopping experience on Wed, Fri, or Sat mornings, drive into downtown Lancaster to their City Market. Fresh produce, seafood, and deli options will greet you at every turn. You can eat lunch in the market though the seating is very limited. There are several unique shops around the market area including a wonderful gift shop in the Museum across the street from the market.
