The Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur area is another good place to consider checking out for a few days. Lots to see and do without all of the hassles of the big city. Sausalito is another option for an area to stay. Just across the bridge from SF and on the way to Napa.

Fly into SFO and spend the two nights in the City. Then get a rental car and head south to the Monterey Peninsula. Spend the rest of the time there. They have plenty of wineries to visit in that area plus the ocean, Big Sur, Hearst Castle, etc. You will have a great 4 nights. Then book your return flight home out of San Jose Airport as it is only 1.5 hour drive from Monterey and more dependable than SFO. Do the Napa thing on another trip. Or do four nights this trip in Napa. You do not want to spend all of your time in a car and we do have a traffic problem in this area that people forget about.

What are your interests? Do you like wine tasting, fine dining, redwoods, beaches, hiking, shopping? You could easily spend a week in either the wine country, SF, Monterey or Yosemite, depending on what activities you look for in a vacation. Give us a little more insight and maybe us Californians can help out.

Nanci - We just did the Monterey and Carmel thing in the first week of August and I would encourage you to do the same...
We stayed in Marina, at the Marina Dunes resort(there's also a Super 8 across the street)... It's right on the Ocean and only ten minutes from Monterey Pier.
There's nothing like a brisk walk in the ocean dunes... we also went on a Whale watching boat through Monterey Whale watch and saw over 50 Blue and Humpback whales.
We spent a day at the Monterey Pier and the Cannery, along with an AMAZING drive to and from Big Sur along HWY 1.
The next day we drove to Carmel, enjoyed the boutiques, beach, and restaurants along with the 17 mile drive. There is plenty more to do that I didn't get to, aquarium, seals, etc.
Look at monterey.com for more...have fun.
