Seward and Homer

We might have 6-7nights available, how many nights would you allocate to each? We're slow tourists, love driving and stopping fpor scenery, but also the park, maybe a fishing day for DH
Recommendations for great B&B's etc with electricity, comfortable beds, and pretty views?

When in 2019? DW and I stayed in a nice B&B on the hill overlooking Homer. One morning while we were eating breakfast, a mama moose and yearling walked by on the road. It was a very good breakfast by a good cook. In Seward the best places are often reserved far in advance by cruise ship sailors.
We drove from Homer over to Seward and back on a day trip and saw the toe of the Exit glacier and most of the Skilak road.
There are options for fishing from Homer and Soldatna.

I would spend a couple of days in each. Perhaps then spend a few nights, on your way back to Anchorage, at Alyeska resort

We spent a week at a fishing lodge on the Kenai River. Before the fishing trip, we spent a few days in Seward. The bay is so beautiful. I loved Seward. We stayed at Sauerdough Lodging. They have changed ownership and remodeled since then, but take a look. We did Homer as a day trip from the fishing lodge. Also a beautiful setting.

You will want to avoid Seward between the 2nd and 5th of July owing to the Mt. Marathon race which is held every July 4. This brings thousands of people (lots more observers than runners) but on top of thousands of cruise passengers coming and going almost daily, the little town gets strained well beyond its capacity. The runners and fans clear out after the 4th.

How many days obviously depends on what you want to do. Presumably you're aware of the various touring options out of both - Kenai Fjords cruises out of Seward, trips around Kachemak Bay out of Homer... I'm quite fond of the little villages of Seldovia and Halibut Cove, reached by boat from Homer, and if you're keen on fishing, halibut fishing out of both is terrific; or you could do a float trip on the Kenai River for trout, Dolly Varden char, or - maybe - king salmon at that time. (The king salmon runs have been poor so fishing might be closed.)

Where else in Alaska are you going, when and for how long?

First we will stay in Anchorage 2 nights ~ 1 night upon arrival (which could be late) and another night after 1 full day to explore Anchorage

Then we take an early flight from Anchorage to King Salmon where we stay at Gold Creek Lodge for 3 nights, 2 days of bear viewing at Brooks Falls, 1 day of fishing

Fly back to Anchorage in the afternoon, pick up a rental car, stay 1 night Anchorage

Drive to Homer, maybe 3 nights?

Drive from Homer to Seward 3 nights?

Leave Seward, drive towards Denali, stay 1 night at Talkeetna

Leave Talkeetna, continue towards Denali, stay outside Denali 1 night

Meet the bus at Denali at 12:15, bus in to North Face Lodge for 4 nights

Leave Denali stay nearby 1 night

Drive back to Anchorage stay 1 night

Fly home

So we have about 20 nights

And I've just started this although reservations at Gold Creek and Denali North Face are made/confirmed/deposit paid ~ I had to book those on availability, not on my desired times!
So if you have suggestions/favorites near Homer and Seward please let me know

If you are in Kenai area for 4th of July, they have a fun parade and activities https://www.aspenhotelsak.com/kenai/...th-july-kenai/ Everyone recommends avoiding Seward on July 4 but you have to go thru the Kenai/Soldotna area to get to Homer and the timing might be right for the parade. Although you mixed Alyeska resort, Girdwood is the site of the Forest Fair that's held around July 4: music, crafts, food vendors, etc. Great place to find souvenirs. Check the websites for Kenai peninsula area news and keep watch on their calendars. I attended a very interesting quilt show around the time of your visit. At the time there was also news of happenings at the Sea Life Center in Seward.
We enjoyed Independence Mine historic area north of Wasilla. There are also various farmers markets which are fun to visit.

That does sound fun but we probably won't be there until July 8
I will check out the Kenai peninsula area website though, thanks for the tip

In Homer we stayed at the Alaskan Suites- nice cabins with views of the bay. Not a B&B but they did have kitchens and there is a light breakfast available. I thought it was a nice place to stay.

The most fun thing we did in Homer was take a boat- the DannyJ- to Halibut Cove where we had dinner at the Saltry Restaurant. There are several artist studios to visit after dinner. The restaurant is on the water, has a big outdoor fireplace and when we were there had music on the deck. It was really a fun experience. If you decide to go, make your reservations as far ahead as you can because it fills up quickly.

We spent July 4 in Talkeetna. They have a parade and the town is full of people. Several cute restaurants in town.

Just noticed that Gardyloo posted about Halibut Cove too. I highly recommend it.

Let me compliment you on your choice of North Face Lodge. We like to stay at Camp Denali but the cabins with outhouses are not for everyone. The hiking End other activities, plus food and amenities are the same for both lodges. We are going for our fourth visit next June, probably before you arrive, from your schedule.

I was going to suggest lodging for Seward and Homer, but it sounds like you have made bookings. For others reading, the Alaska Paddle Inn in Seward is a standout for self-catering, real Alaskan handcrafted space with water view.

Thanks Enzian, yes I am one of those who is "past" the outhouse experience! We don't need swimmimg pools, spas etc, but we do like our bathroom "inside"!

I do love knowing where I am by the views from wherever we stay
This is where I booked in Homer for 3 nights. We have never booked with airbnb, usually VRBO, Rural Retreats and others, but the owner is a "super host" and there are 50 reviews, so I feel pretty comfortable. She was wonderful to work with in the booking process. It has a washer and dryer which is something I always try to find in the middle of a vacation.

However no one can have the High Tide Room at Paddle Inn for 3 certain nights in July as we already have it booked

Would love some suggestions for some other nights, but I'll start a new thread since this was about Homer and Seward

Thanks all!

Less time in Seward than Homer. However, one of our days in Homer was spent flying to Kenai NP, Brooks Falls and back. Incredible experience. Enjoyed Halibut Cove. We were not ensmoured with Seward at all. All I remeber is lots of bars, noise.
I don’t consider Ayeska a resort. Girdwood was fun. Stunning views from top of chairlift.
We also stayed at a fishing lodge on Kenai River.

That Homer property you have booked looks lovely. We were up in that neighborhood for a quick look around after dinner at the Little Mermaid on the Spit. My husband could not stop gazing out the window at the view. He said he understood how people could never want to leave Homer.

Great that you were able to book the High Tide Room! Alan and Alison are great hosts. I want a shower that looks like the one in that room! Be sure to walk down the beach and look for sea otters.
