We arrived at 12:30--I think I noticed that that table was one of maybe only two occupied. We had our 24-year-old daughter with us and our show wasn't starting until 3. It's a small, small world!

I just saw a clip of Tim Gunn and thought of Neo.

We really need FF buttons so we'll recognize each other in our travels.

Tim Gunn? I don't think I look like him -- first of all he doesn't have a full head of thick, gray (white) hair.

I'm more of a cross between Marty Feldman and Dame Edna. (OK, just try to picture that!)

I LOVED this report - will cut and paste - if only to dream about some of the venues.

I waited too long too book the Big Apple and it's booked clear through May and probably infinity. So I'm looking for another apartment now.

Patrick, if you have a discard that might be ok for a couple of budget travelers, please remark.

I have to agree about the name tags! Everywhere we go anymore, I look around and wonder who might be one of my pals on Fodor's or Cruisecritics. I did meet up with one of them at the elevator in a hotel in Buenos Aires! Small world, indeed.

We'll be there the middle of May for about 10 days, just in case there might be a GTG. (Wishful thinking)

I've marked my calendar for a GTG NYC meeting on June 2nd. But I'll be there starting May 13 -- maybe a mini one?

I'm getting lots of rejects for apartments but mostly they only do by the month -- or more. Yes, bigapple has become reallllllly popular and hard to book. We chose our week last week based on the only opening they had in about a three month time slot.

Dude! How did you score all those tickets? Online? I use Broadwaybox.com , but never needed tickets in this magnitude. Or did you get very lucky with the same-day booths? I suppose what matters is did you know in advance the exact shows you wished to see, or just went along with whatever was available. In any case, that is some pace!

I did all the tickets in advance starting with The Apple Tree about two months before going. That was the reason we wanted to go to New York, and I found front row mezzanine seats for that, then set our specific dates. I used discounts from Broadway Box and went online for a number of the shows, but ended up calling Telecharge to discuss seating and in nearly every case got front row mezzanine seats (sometimes sort of to the side) when the the website would only show me rear or side orchestra or rear mezzanine. I've learned NOT to trust those "best seats available" on the websites. I think the only show we paid full price for was Company -- no discounts available on Saturday night which was our opening at that time.

We even lucked out with LaTraviata at the Met. We had booked Martin Short that night, but his show ended up posting an early closing, so I checked the Met website and found two front row center of the Dress Circle. I couldn't believe those seats were right -- for $100 since there was practically nothing else available, so I called and the woman told me they must have been returns that just went online and I should grab them. I did.

And yes, I knew ahead exactly what shows we wanted to see, although Color Purple wasn't on my "must see" list and used to fill out the final night -- I'm sure glad we added that. Also Gutenberg the Musical was simply because there was virtually nothing else on Sunday night. I had hoped to see Chicago again for Bebe Neuwirth as Roxie, as that plays Sunday evenings -- but as luck would have it -- no shows at all on that Sunday.

Patrick,
I need to start with a list of the shows that will be (probably) available in May. Can you guide me to a website?

Do you post on Slow Trav sometimes? I notice they are going to have a GTG in May also.

It would be great fun to meet for wine or coffee or whatever - As of now, we have no plans - no reservations....

I need to get busy.

Don't think I've ever posted on slow trav -- maybe reviewed a rental once.

I'd go to Playbill.com for full listings.
Also www.broadwaybox.com for discount codes for booking in advance.

While we were in NYC I did get tickets for Deuce the new Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes two woman show for May. Also booked 110 in the Shade at the Roundabout with Audra MacDonald. These are two I really wanted to see. The reviews from Legally Blonde, the new musical opening in April (May?) that opened this week in California is getting surprisingly RAVE reviews.

While we were in NYC I did get tickets for Deuce the new Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes two woman show for May 22, a Tuesday. Also booked 110 in the Shade at the Roundabout with Audra MacDonald for Saturday matinee, June 9. These are two I really wanted to see and doubt that either will have discounts available. If you get tickets to Deuce our dates, let's meet -- or let's meet anyway.

OOOPs. Forget what I said about no discounts likely for Deuce. I see that Playbill.com now has a special -- almost half price until July!

Hello,
I'm finally planning for NYC (have done all the DC that I can think of as we go there first)

I emailed my contact about the apartment but she is out of touch until the 2nd week in March, so I'll try again, but I hope you have found and contracted for exactly what you have been looking for by then!

I haven't begun to make reservations and I know that I need to. You guys will be there before and after we come! We'll arrive on the 24th and leave on the 31st. So you'll see "Deuce" before we arrive.

We're hoping to do a musical, a play and an off-Broadway for starters. I took a fast look at Broadway Box but didn't see anything discounted that grabbed us. But we're up for almost anything. So I'll take a look at Playbill.com. I've not ordered in advance before. In London I just went by the theatres or called - and got a couple from the Half-Priced place.
Anything new you are looking at?
Carol

NeoPatrick, regarding the "best seats available" when booking with telecharge or ticketmaster, check out this section of a tutorial sent to me in the Broadwaybox newsletter:

Tip #2: Never pick the first ticket you are offered
You have probably selected to get the best seat available and this is what you will get according to the computers determination. It is easy to get additional choices to see if you may like them better. At the bottom of the Tickets page under I don't want these tickets! you have the option to get more ticket choices for the same performance or for other performances in your selected range.

BroadwayOffers will warn you that you may lose the tickets once you go for another set, but the (very small) risk often pays off (unless it is the first few minutes after a best seller show goes into public sale). The good news is that BroadwayOffers provides you a HISTORY of all the tickets that were offered to you, so you can always regret and go back to any of the sets of tickets offered. You click on the History link on the right hand side and see the complete list. More choice means better seats. This requires quick reaction, since following a break of over 3 minutes, Broadwayoffers stops your session and you will lose your History list (but not the tickets).

Always keep the seating chart open on your screen to compare the tickets offered.

Tip #3: Select from several sections of the theater
The default option during your purchase session is: I want the best seat available. Since you and the computer may have different opinions on what is the best seat available why not try the choose by section of the venue option. You can select the orchestra, or mezzanine, and see which seats are available in each section, and for which price. Combining this strategy with the History (tip#2) can yield some great seating options.

Once you decided on your best ticket, go ahead and select I want these tickets. You have 7 minutes to complete the transaction.

The BroadwayBox team wishes you a great theater experience, in the best seats, and with the best prices

SomeDude's solid posting provides an excellent reason why I usually choose to order my tickets by phone rather than online!

Yes, I've followed those hints from SomeDude and from Broadway Box. And yes, all those points are true. Telecharge's website works far better than Tickemaster, however in many of those cases. But like Howard, I've turned to using the old fashioned telephone!

Even if put on hold it probably won't match the amount of time spent clicking and reclicking online for each individual date and area choice. I love calling them and saying "What front row mezzanine seats do you have between Tuesday and Saturday the second week of March" and within minutes I have them.

The last two times I ordered tickets on the phone, I had exactly the same experience: I asked for the best seats and was offered a pair in the orchestra way back and on the side. I then asked about the front mezzanine and both times I was offered excellent center seats up front!
Yes, I'll use the phone every time rather than going on line.
