We just found out our school opening will be delayed for three weeks. With low air fares and off-season rates, we want to go somewhere. Our family has three kids, 14, 12, and 4, and this year we've been to Florida, Colorado (twice--summer and winter), Myrtle Beach, and New York City. I'm stumped. We like outdoors, mountains, beaches, history, etc. In other words, just about anything. I'm thinking about the Everglades. Any other ideas out there? Thanks!

The weather is still warm north of FL. I'd steer clear of FL up to the Carolinas because of hurricane season.

Nantucket!! I used to go every Sept., the best time of year. Beautiful beaches, great hiking, bike riding, water sports, neat history. Only downside is it's still expensive. Maybe a week in Nantucket, a week Martha's vineyard, a week Boston?

New England usually has great weather in September and the crowds of tourists are mostly gone.

How about a lakeside cabin in Maine? You could do a day trip to the ocean, a mountain-climb one day with a stop at the Maine State Museum...fishing, boating, swimming and relaxing.

I'm beginning to feel like I work for the VA Chamber of Commerce!How about cheap tickets to Dulles or BWI,stay in the western suburbs & take a full day trip into DC & the Smithsonian,drive to Skyline Drive (Shenandoah Natl.Park), for 2-3 nites w/day trip to Charlottesville (Monticello & Univ. of VA), across to Colonial Williamsburg (at least 2 nites) and back up the Eastern Shore to Annapolis(US Naval Academy).
Second choice would be cheap tickets to Manchester,NH and roaming NE before the leaf peepers hit.Lots of NE suggestions under the individual states.

sam, the hurricanes have already arrived and in order to avoid a hurricane, she would also have to avoid the mid Atlantic AND New England. Hurricane Alex, parellel with Nova Scotia last week was still packing 100+ mile an hour winds.

September is cheap in Florida. Disney is a great deal then.

I'd go to the national parks in Southern Utah - Bryce and Zion. Maybe the N. Rim of Grand Canyon too. Great scenery and hiking. Flights into Vegas are cheap...rent a car from there.

Yosemite and Northern California?

San Francisco, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe.

The Everglades are not a great destination in September- very hot, very buggy, and the great variety of birds that winter there have not yet arrived.

I vote for New England. The agricultural fairs are in full swing, the biggest is Eastern States Exposition in Springfield Mass which is held in late September. You can rent kayaks or canoes, visit historical places of all kinds, hike the White Mountains, etc. If the weather is bad, visit a museum. The Portsmouth NH area might be a good choice. Visit Strawbery Banke Historical area, the seacoast science center at Odiorne Point, go sea kayaking, and the mountains are only an hour away. There's a great water park on Rt 1 but I'm not sure how late in September they stay open. There are several day cruises to choose from. Boston is less than an hour's drive.

I'd go to Yellowstone and Grand Teton NPs. The weather's still great at that time of year, and you'll have fewer fellow tourists. You may also be more likely to see wildlife.
