Hi - I'm Canadian and am trying to buy trip cancellation insurance. My husband has a sore back right now for which he is receiving physiotherapy (nothing serious - just an irritant, but treatment is treatment). As far as the insurers in Canada are concerned, that's a pre-existing condition, and they won't sell us insurance - even at a higher premium.

I talked to Travel Guard and they will waive the pre-existing condition and sell to Canadians. I'd appreciate any comments regarding this company - they're obviously large, and (hopefully) reputable.

I can't help you with this particular company, but I'd suggest that regardless of who you go with, you make sure what they require for cancellation (ex. is having pain enough, or does he need proof of hospitalization, etc.) and also check to make sure that if he is not well enough to go that your own expenses are reimbursed as well.

I insured a trip with TravelGuard earlier this year. I did end up making a trip delay claim and was very pleased with the claims process -- the forms were straightforward, and I had resolution within a few weeks of filing. I would not hesitate to recommend them, and have purchased a policy for a trip next year.

Of course, reading the fine print to make sure what you are concerned about is covered is very important.

Your coverage is only what is included in the contract. Any verbal waiver, is worthless...it must be in writing.

I've used them before, but have not had to file a claim. The policy seemed pretty inclusive, but I focused on specific concerns (Caribbean in hurricane season)...I know a lot of people who use Travel Guard often - it's a pretty reputable company from what I've heard. Again, read the fine print to make sure your specific needs will be met.

I used Travelguard for my cruises after hearing so many positive things about them on cruise boards. Luckily, I haven't had to file a claim, but I talked to others who have and they were quite pleased. I think it's a wise choice if you're spending big money on travel to pay a few extra for insurance.JMO

Most insurance companies will be nice to you if you don't file a claim.

It's when you file an expensive claim that they investigate to see if there is a way out of paying.

Thanks to all for your comments and advice. I've had a close look at the full agreement and am satified this fits our needs - hopefully we won't have to use it, but that's why you buy insurance!
