Planning a trip to California and Nevada in August. I understand this is America's holiday period can you please let me know the dates of this break and when school goes back. Thanks

There isn't a fixed summer break in the States, but most schools let out around the first week of June and return around the first week of September. But this varies from state to state by as much as 2 weeks. Perhaps residents of CA and NV can give you specifics.

From mid May to September 6th (Labor Day), schools will be out somewhere. The majority of families will be on holiday from July 1 through August 15th so that will be the busiest time.

As others have said, breaks vary from one state to another, and even from one town to the next. My kids here in Boston get out in mid-June and go back in early September, but their cousins in Florida get out in mid-May and go back in mid-August.

Just to make things even more interesting, many communities in California have gone to year-round schools. The kids don't go year-round, they still get off 3 months, but the schools operate all year, so only 3/4 of the kids are in school at a time. This helps tremendously in communities with overcrowding, since mere rescheduling increases their buildings' capacity by 33 percent.

In NY the last day of school is usually in the 3rd week of June (mid 20's) and it begins the Monday after Labor Day (early September). In many of the southern and southwestern states, school lets out in May and begins again in August. Basically, there will be many families on vacation throughout August.

All above should give you useful info about school dates. I offer an opinion that more people with kids travel before mid-August than after - purely anectdotal and observation from families we know. By the end of August many kids are either back in school or home getting ready to go back to school. An exception to that is around northeast where most schools start just before or just after Labor Day, some families pick that week to vacation since camps, summer activities, etc. that their kids have been attending have ended for the season - so that is when they vacation.
