Scenic drive: Boston to Bar Harbor
A few of us are considering a trip from Boston (2 days/1 night) and driving to Bar Harbor Maine. We'll have 3-4 days to use. Should we stop anywhere between Boston & Bar Harbor or just drive straight up? Also, in a limited amount of time, what does anyone recommend we do?
Thanks!

By all means, take your time and enjoy the drive!!! We did this trip a few years ago and have been trying to duplicate it ever since. We divided the trip between I-95 and US-1. We took a brief drive thru Kennebunkport where the Bush family has a retreat, a stop in Freeport(past Portland but before Brunswick) to go to the LL Bean outlet--lots of other great shopping there. After Brunswick, we picked up Highway 1 to Bar Harbor. Take the opportunity to see some of the great shoreline and lighthouses on the way. While in Bar Harbor drive up Cadillac Mt. in Acadia National Park. There is a great restaurant in the Park--I forget the name--the food was wonderful!!Take a boat tour around the "Quiet side" of the island. Visit the Japanese Sand Garden and the more formal English gardens. Go to Thurstons for lobster(also on the quiet side). I could go on and on. Let me know if I can help you any more.

We made this trip last summer, stopping off for a few days on Monhegan Island (gorgeous, gorgeous and so fun for us) and then on to Bar Harbor. We stayed at the Park Lodge Motel right at the entrance to Acadia. It was beautifully situated on the water with rolling green hilss to the rocky shore.very reasonable rates in early June. We had a tremendous time biking in Acadia. We, too, enjoyed the food at the Jordan Pond restaurant in Acadia. We had some great lobster on Monhegan and also in bar Harbor with delectable blueberry pie.

We do this trip every year and it's outstanding. Monhegan Island is a nice detour, however if you don't have much time to spend there then you should focus on Bar Harbor and the route up. Kennebunkport is awesome! Very quaint...The Maine Stay Inn is a superb place to stop for the night. We usually hug the coast and stay on 1A for the entire trip up and opt for the quicker 95 on the way back down. I would strongly recommend you try to do 1A if you can because the villages you will pass through are each so special and beautiful! Some notable towns: Wiscasset, Camden, Kennebunkport...all in Maine...Manchester by the Sea and Rockport, MA are both wonderful too!
