Scarlett, mah deah, if that Yankee insists on driving like a manaic, just be sure that, if you encounter a stretch where the prevailing clime allows open windows, you secure your broad brimmed picture hat with a tasteful silk scarf (preferably Hermes) lest it fly off and confound the local who finds it on the side of the road.

Well now there's an idea for a movie, Driving Miss Scarlett ((~)) ...once they reach Portland it may be time for the sequel Driving Miss Scarlett Crazy ;-)

MelJ Aug 6th, 2005 02:56 PM

Just saw this, Scarlett--sending my very best wishes for happiness in your new hometown!!

PamSF Aug 6th, 2005 03:32 PM

Ah Scarlett~the Pearl District awaits you. The Whole Foods is unlike any of I've shopped in with the exception of the new Bellvue,WA store. And, don't forget those French Quarter Linens.
Sometime venture up to the Rose Garden and read the names of the various Queens of Rosaria. It's s commentary on history and women's roles.
May you enjoy a continuous sampling of the Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs:)

ARE THEY THERE YET? ARE THEY THERE YET?

LoveItaly Aug 6th, 2005 05:26 PM

Oh right, it is Saturday isn't it, LOL!!

Shall we call the Portland TV station's and have them at all the off ramps to downtown Portland.

Can't you see the news video. Yankee screeching into town at 90 mph. Scarlett holding on to her wide brim hat with one hand and waving "hiya all" with the other hand. And Pup of course, in the back seat, with his head hanging out the window smoking a Camel.

dsquared Aug 6th, 2005 05:49 PM

Oh lord! Portland will never be the same ;-)

Scarlett, I am so envious! I did the opposite move 8 years ago - Washington state to Florida - and as much as I enjoy Florida (well not so much during hurricane season), I miss home.

Here are a few pointers to get you started in your new home:

You Know You're A Northwesterner When:

1. You use the statement "sun break" and know what it means.

2. You know more than 10 ways to order coffee.

3. You know more people who own boats than air conditioners.

4. You feel overdressed wearing a suit to a nice restaurant.

5. You stand on a deserted corner in the rain without an umbrella waiting
for the "Walk" signal.

6. You consider that if it has no snow or has not recently erupted, it is not a real mountain.

7. You know the difference between Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye salmon.

8. You consider swimming an indoor sport.

9. In winter, you go to work in the dark and come home in the dark while
only working 8 hour shifts.

10. You are not fazed by "Today's forecast: showers followed by rain,"
and "Tomorrow's forecast: rain followed by showers."

11. You know that Boring is a town in Oregon and not just a state of
mind.

12. You can point to at least two volcanoes, even if you cannot see
through the cloud cover.

13. You put on your shorts and fire up the barbecue when the temperature
gets above 50, but still wear your hiking boots and parka.

14. You switch to your sandals when it gets about 60, but keep the socks
on.

15. You have actually used your mountain bike on a mountain.

16. You buy new sunglasses every year, because you can't find the old
ones after such a long time. Or better yet, you continue to wear your
sunglasses on cloudy and rainy days.

17. You carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use
them.

33. You know all the important seasons: Almost Winter (Winter), Still
raining (Spring) Road construction (Summer), Deer & Elk season (Fall).

Head up to the Pittock Mansion and kiss the ground for me, OK?

Best of luck!

Fodorite018 Aug 6th, 2005 07:16 PM

LoveItaly--LOL! Oh my...what a sight that would be:)

dsquared--As a born and raised Oregonian (with a couple years in WA), I have to say that I fit that list to a "T", lol! BTW, when DH and I got married after college, we promptly moved to FL. What a culture shock for me! I still remember the first thunderstorm there and how terrified I was. Yes, it is good to be back in the PNW...and I hope Scarlett likes it as much as we do.

JimF Aug 6th, 2005 08:31 PM

Now that I have at least been to Portland once, I can put some of these references in perspective. Where was it that Scarlett bought a house? I tried to find her posting when she celebrated her purchase, but no dice.

Update...Scarlett, the Yankee, and Pup arrived safely! Not sure about the sane part, but they are here:D I spoke to her this afternoon and she SOUNDS sane though!

OneWanderingJew Aug 7th, 2005 01:53 PM

That's awesome, MMS. When you speak to her again, tell her her friends in Fodorsville miss her **lots** :)

elaine Aug 12th, 2005 06:23 AM

just looking for updates on Scarlett, her email accounts are suspended, but I'm thinking her new life is in full gear!

Fodorite018 Aug 12th, 2005 06:32 AM

Elaine--Yes, she is here and settling in. Pup have been "dining" with them at places such as Bluehour, Paragon and Red Star Tavern. I am sure he is a perfect gentleman!

johnthedorf Aug 12th, 2005 07:35 AM

mms....Did she mention the heat driving cross country? Woof, not my time of the year to drive it! Wish I was in the PNW right now since it's pretty warm here in SoFla. Thanks for the news

Fodorite018 Aug 12th, 2005 07:52 AM

John--She did say that the drive was not too bad. I am with you though, the heat this time of year, ugh. Then again, I am a total heat wimp! Pup did fine on the drive, but she said by the last day he just curled up in a tiny ball with his blanket and teddy bear, like he had had enough of the car for a while. He is enjoying his new home though!

Al_LaCarte Aug 12th, 2005 07:57 AM

Scarlett,

I was on vacation the day you left and just now discovered your "bon voyage". May the best of your past, be the worst of your future!

All the best to you and "The Yankee".

AL ((d))

Scarlett Aug 22nd, 2005 07:04 PM

Hello darlins!!!

I am sitting here with tears in my eyes, from all the sweet good wishes and the camel discussion LOL

Pup , the Yankee, and I are happily ensconced in our new apt, looking out over the Pearl and beyond..we are SO in love with Portland!
Pup has made many friends already, from the doormen to the local cafes, he has his admirers..
He has been dining in some rather posh places, as dear mms has mentioned, we are going to have to ease him back into eating at home again.
He does like his happy hour at Bluehour as well as brunch at Oba ((&))
I will post a seperate trip report, it was an amazing drive, ( amazing that we did not arrive with a bag full of speeding tickets) and made me love this huge and beautiful country even more..a drive across the United States is a very good idea for everyone..
Amazing that there really are marriages where a couple with a dog can drive for 5 days at high speed and still be speaking when they arrive at their destination LOL
Amazing that no bad things happened, everything worked, happened on time and the way it was planned.
Big hugs to all of you, this was such fun to read..
btw...today is our first day of being connected to the World again and this was a sweet way to ease back into it :)
((L)) Scarlett

LoveItaly Aug 22nd, 2005 07:11 PM

Hi Scarlett, it is great to see you posting again, I missed you! So Pup is spoiled. Oh well, he deserves to be, LOL.

Are you unpacked and settled in? I sure hope so. I am so happy that you are happy with your new resident and surrondings. And no speeding tickets, that is really good news! Take good care and big hugs!

Tiff Aug 22nd, 2005 07:23 PM

Welcome "home" Scarlett,

So happy you arrived safely. Sophie say to say hi to Pup and good job for the long drive! ((&))

Make sure to teach those Oregonians how to say "darlin" the right way, k?!?

Looking forward to hearing more about the drive across our great country, glad you are back, Tiff
