Savannah or Charleston for a long weekend?

My Mom is wanting for us to go away for a long weekend in May - she would like to treat and said that she knows I have always wanted to go to one of these two towns and thought that it would be nice for a long weekend.

If you had to pick one for a 3 night stay which one and why?

Where would you stay? Budget is open.

If you have never been to either I would go to Savannah. It's smaller, more compact, great history and fine fine food for dining. Go to Savannah City Market near the river and enjoy the fine shops and restaurants. There are 22 parks or squares to walk and enjoy. Charleston is also outstanding it's just larger and more spread out. They are both similar in history.

You won't go wrong with either destination but my vote is Charleston. I love that little city! I think it's compact enough to do it justice in 3 days and more good restaurants than you'll have time for. Some cute boutiques too!

Stay in the historic district. Hopefully GoTravel (forget her new signon) will chime in. This trip report is 2 yrs old but plenty of good info

I just spend a wonderful week in Savannah. You can walk or take the free buses around the historic district of the city. The River Walk with shops and plenty of places to eat that is inexpensive. The city has squares(park)where different historic events took place.Walk in the City Market and many Beautiful homes.
And a wonderful meal at the Old Pink House $$$
I will visit again...

Charleston without a doubt. What is "big" about the historic area of Charleston (as being "compact" for Savannah?). SO much more to do and so much better food.

American flies direct into both cities from DFW and there is little difference in the airfare so that will not be a determining factor.

Either. Both are wonderful. The debate will never be decided.

My favorite is Savannah.

If you want to add on a day or two for an amazing experience, drive a bit further south and stay at this historic inn on an (almost) deserted coastal barrier island.

My favorites in Charleston are the Planters Inn and the Vendue Inn.

I have many favorites in Savannah. Inns and historic hotels and new hotels built to look like they've been there forever.

My new favorite in Savannah is the Staybridge Suites but I would love to try the new Bohemian Hotel right on the river.

Savannah and Charleston are both excellent destinations. I'd just choose one for now and go to the other one another time.
