I would also skip HH and replace it with the lovely Hunting Island, SC.
I'm always interested in how Charleston and Savannah get put up against each other like sports teams. They are both beautiful and worthy of time in their own ways.

Since you are flying into Atlanta you should stop in Macon for the night and visit for a day "The Song of the South" city. Then come on down to Savannah. You will need at least 2-3 full days to get into the history of our fabulous city. Savannah is full of Revolutionary War along with Civil War history and you will only touch upon it in your short visit. Forget about Hilton Head unless you are bound for golfing. Go to Tybee for your beach fix, climb the light house and dine in one their great off the beaten track restaurants. Check out Ft Pulaski while there, then head back to Savannah for more music by some of our quirky Savannah natives.
We will be happy to show you our Savannah in January. Your weather should be sunny and probably in the 50's during the day. While in Savannah stay in a B&B,(hopefully ours) you can't go wrong. We will happily show you around!

As long as you are in the area don't miss the rest of the Georgia coast. Should be a bit warmer than Hilton Head and Charleston Beaches. Darien's, Sapelo Island, Saint Simon's (crowded), Jekyll and Cumberland Islands. Other than Saint Simon's and Jekyll these Georgia barrier islands have limited to minimal development. Beautiful beaches great for shelling and walking.
