Savanah - what to do in a day...

Can anyone hit on some of the Highlights of Savanah? My family and I will be in Hilton Head and thought we would drive to Savanah, just for the day.

Any ides? Walking tours? Suggestions of a fun place for lunch?

Thanks!

Downtown Savanah is lovely - just park somewhere and get out and walk around. There are plenty of little shops to explore, squares and gardens to relax in and lots of nice restaurants down along the river. I spent an afternoon there last May with no planned itinerary and had a wonderful time.

Savanah is indeed a lovely side trip. We took a trolley tour which was very nice. We also took a boat tour/ride which I would skip as it seemed to just go along industrial sites and you don't really see anything pretty. Can't remember where we ate but there are a lot of fun places.

I second the idea of walking around the various squares, as Savannah is a beautiful city. You might enjoy "The Midnight Garden " tour, especially if you have read the book. It is fun and also takes you to the cemetary , which is in a beautiful setting. There have been many recommendations for the restaurant ,"Lady & Her Sons". Also Savannah Bistro, I believe is another one. You might enjoy Mrs. Wilkes for lunch also if it is open. It serves southern dishes in a family style setting. There are several older homes in the area that are open for tours.

You could have a great time just walking around on your own. But I have to say I've taken the trolly tour 2x (and I usually hate them) and both times I thought it was great.

Park your car, walk along River Street, buy some pralines, choose a trolley or horse drawn carriage ride, or take a walking tour. Eat at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House if you like good, basic, family style Southern cooking (a bit hard to find - ask for directions and be there before 11:30 to be in line) or Lady & Sons (Paula Dean's wedding in going to be on the Food Network in a couple of weekends). For a great dinner, I love the Pink House!

Funny, I was going to post and ask the EXACT same question (hilton head for a week and going to Savanah for a day). I'm particularly intersted in the food options. If we're just there for a day (with two small children), which would you pick: Lady & Sons or Mrs Wilkes? They both seem to have authentic southern food, can anyone tell me how they differ?
