Santa Fe Wkend Travelogue
Hi Everyone:
Just returned from a quick weekend girls (ok, middle age women's) trip to Santa Fe. Because of a raging blizzard, the trip took 8hrs from Denver! Normally should be about 6. After watching cars sliding off the highway the entire way, we pulled into the plaza area.
Had a chance to walk through some of the great little boutiques surrounding the plaza before everything shut down. Had dinner at Tomasitas, which was recommended here and by a shop owner. Thought it was very over rated. It was very hot, noisy, bathrooms were scary and most of all, the food was mediocre.
Next morning, walked through the Jackalope on Cerillos - its like a Pier One that blew up! Huge area with imported stuff from around the world. Great place to get trinket stuff, souvenirs, beads, etc. Walked around the plaza and checked out the Native American vendors under the eaves of the Palace of Govenors. I love this as you're usually buying direct from the artist, everything is signed/initialled by the artist and all the silver is sterling. Each artist is certified by the museum in the Palace of Govenors as authentic. Grabbed a quick, but very good lunch at The Shed, just off the plaza. We got there early 11:30, but by noon the place was filled and had a waitlist. Drove off for our spa appts at Ten Thousand Waves day spa. Wonderful! I'd recommend making reservations at least 2 wks in advance as we couldn't get all our appointments at the same time when booking just a week in advance. Luckily, they have great outdoor hot tubs to wait in until your appointment. Very relaxed - drove down and had a perfect dinner at Cafe Pasquals. Expensive, but the food was exquisite, service was good. People next to us recognized us from the spa. Guess we had the right idea. I'd recommend making a reservation for dinner as its a very small restaurant.
We stayed at the Hampton Inn on Cerrillos. Good value as its a few miles from town. Rooms were very clean, nice indoor pool and hot tub and small gym. Rates included a very good breakfast. And most of all, got airline miles! All in all - great trip, if too short.

Hi Jayne:
At Pasqual's I had the Vietnamese calamari salad, mom had Thai scallops, forgot what my sister had. The dinner menu has an Asian Fusion flair and everything was wonderful. We shared a chocolate dessert that was decadent and amazing. The breakfast and lunch menus were definitely Southwestern.

Hi Blyvail, we are considering going to Santa Fe for a short vacation and your posting was great , very informative.
How far was the Hampton INN, how did you get in town everyday, by car<>? Is so was it easy to park in town?
Last time we stayed in the Inn of the Annazasis, lovely but expensive and I am thinking that you were wiser than we.
How expensive is the spa you mentioned. How many days did you stayed in Santa and did you go to other places nearby. We would be flying a long way from Florida. This year we have to be more careful with our expenses.Thank you.

Grazeilla,
You might want to check out El Rey Inn on Cerrillos. They have very good rates and a distincitive Santa Fe style atmosphere, plus a very charming free breakfast.
