Santa Fe v. Taos lodging - did I make a mistake?

I just booked a few days in August at a 3 bedroom house a few blocks from the Taos Plaza. Our plan is to spend the first night of our trip in Santa Fe and the last 3 nights in Taos. We did this for several reasons. Our older teens primarily want to do outdoor activities near the ski areas, ie rafting, jeep tours, atv rentals, riding the ski lift, hiking, horseback riding, etc. Also, the lodging was relatively less expensive in Taos than Santa Fe. But here's my question. I recently read a few messages on this board from people who HATE Taos. Now I'm wondering if I messed up. Our accomodations are supposedly 1/4 mile from the Taos Plaza. Any input, suggestions or words of comfort are welcome.
Thanks!

I didn't care for Taos, not much there for me really. I was happy I just did a day trip, but maybe someone else will feel differently.

i don't think i would worry. santa fe is larger, more sophisticated, more expensive, crowded, but wonderful. taos is small. but the scenery around there is so marvelous, who needs the city?? sounds like you made a good decision for the kids. just lay back and watch the sunsets.

Taos is now the way Santa Fe was 30 years ago, well, maybe 25. Consider it a ride in a time machine, where you get to see what put Santa Fe on the map in the first place.

Thanks for the words of comfort. I guess I'll look at it as a learning experience. Perhaps next time, when hubby and I can get away by ourselves, we'll stay in Santa Fe.

For your kids, Taos is almost certainly the best bet.
Now that I'm older, I prefer Santa Fe.

By the way, try to get to Bandelier National Monument (which is closer to Santa Fe, than Taos). Your kids will LOVE that place.
