santa fe lodging--best value
Hi -- I will be spending about 5 days in Santa Fe this summer (July) for a workshop and will have a rental car. Any suggestions for economy lodging--amenities don't matter as long as it is truly quiet (I'm a light sleeper) and clean. Thanks very much!

SAGE INN. Godd rates, good location, good free bfast, clean, short distance to a nd free shuttle to plaza, and it is directly across from the Railyard area where the farmer's market is. And it is next to Whole FOods and across st. from La Choza restaurant.
I am also a lite sleeper- ask for a room on the back of the inn, bldg C, facing the park in back of the property, on 2nd floor. Do not get a 1st floor rm as it is a motel, people will be driving up to their rms and their lights wil shine in your rm if u are on 1st floor. If you are a AAA member, they offer AAA discount.

Sage Inn is usually a good value and doesn't charge for parking (or it didn't used to). It is about a 15 min walk to the plaza but they do offer a shuttle if you don't want to deal with parking your own car. Also, Garrett's Desert Inn. I don't like it as much but it has an excellent location. It charges $8 a day for parking. That is the same daily rate at the San Francisco street garage.

Check out the Santa Fe Motel & Inn. Compare the foregoing with the Sage Inn at www.tripadvisor.com. People that have stayed in both usually favor the Santa Fe Motel & Inn. It's located at 510 Cerrillos Rd where as the Sage Inn is two blocks further down Cerrillos so the Santa Fe Motel is closer to downtown, within easy walking distance. The Santa Fe Motel & Inn also has free parking and serves a complimentary breakfast. I stayed there last year for 4 days and the folks that take care of the place are very friendly and the lodging is well kept-very clean.

Sage Inn is kind of high for July- $120. Maybe it is bc there is a lot going on in Santa Fe in summer, it is high season. I paid $55 AAA rate at Sage Inn last month...
As Deb said, there are some other hotels a bit further out Cerillos. Rd. Some of them are not chains- I looked at one that was very cool looking, a 60s hotel type place, but I can't recall the name. also, Hyatt Place (lower price Hyatt chain, nice concept, I stayed in one on our recent trip to NM) has recently opened a hotel in Santa Fe, I don't know what their rates are.
What about Chapelle Casitas? Nice castias w/character, right by the Georgia O'Keefe museum near the plaza. Great location. Many people are staying there for the fodors get together in Sept. I checked rates for that Sept weekend and there were some one bedrm castias for $83. Check that out. Nice owner.

To me, economy lodging means inexpensive, so that is why I suggested the chains out on Cerrillos Road.
Santa Fe has lots of places with more charm and uniqueness but often that means more $$. El Rey Inn is quirky and less costly than some of the more southwestern like places and may be only a bit more than chains.

July will not be an inexpensive month to visit as it's high season for hotel rates. There are deals to be had but you may have to stay on Cerillos as Deb mentioned.
El Rey is nice and we've had good rates there -- $99 and no parking fee. Drive to the plaza is around 5 minutes.
There is a rental I know of that is near the plaza on the north side in the affordable range. I'll post it when I come across it. It is a condo with a kitchen and parking.
