Sanibel Island in February

We are planning our first ever February trip to Sanibel. We always visit the islands in July. We're wondering about the weather and water temps that time of year? Also, how long should we prepare to wait for dinner at restaurants (better to go early or late?). And, how's the traffic? Thanks for any input.

In terms of weather and wildlife, you are in for a treat! The weather will be so much better - July is really rough. It will be beautiful and temperate. Plus you get a lot more wildlife in Ding Darling etc. I really love going to Sanibel this time of year.

The downside is, of course, the crowds. I would definitely go early for dinner, and avoid making trips over the causeway b/c it can get pretty backed up.

I haven't been to Sanibel in February in a while, so hopefully others have more up-to-date info for you.

Thank you, Birder. We really didn't see a lot of wildlife in Ding Darling this year in July. I've heard the crowds are bigger in February. We're still excited though. Thanks again.

We went to Sanibel in Feb 2004 and didn't find it too crowded but we did eat early (6pm)
The weather was great that year. The kids went swimming in the sea and the hotel pool. Paridise for shell collectors; I developed the Sanibel stoop!

Yes, you don't see as many birds in the summer because the tides are so high. In the winter, the tides are much lower, so the birds will come in alot closer. You should try to plan your visit to Ding Darling around low tide, and you will see stunning amounts of birds! Also, be sure to go to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation's preserve - they have over 4 miles of trails, a butterfly house, and more. I think they ask for a small donation, maybe a few dollars. It was gorgeous.
