Honestly, reasonable means nothing, especially when you're talking about a place like Sanibel. Are you talking about $200 or $500 a night, for example?
Also are you aware there are VERY few hotels on the beach? Might you want an apartment instead?

If you are staying for a week, check out Forty Fifteen. Gulf front and great prices. www.fortyfifteen.com
If you are not staying for a week, consider the Blue Dolphin http://www.bluedolphincottages.com/default.aspx
They have rates as low as $139/night for the time period you are talking about, and it is a Gulf Front property. They also get good reviews on tripadvisor.
We stayed at Forty Fifteen and loved it. We found out about the Blue Dolphin because we would walk right by it when walking the beach. These two are in a quiet residential area - a big plus in my book!

I've just seen your post, and although a little late in responce, Sanibel is worth the trip. It is also very expensive. I like the sunset beach resort. It runs around $250 a night. If you haven't found a hotel yet you very well may not find one on the island. Rooms book up super fast.Check out hotels.com, they've helped me in the past.
