San Luis Obispo

My Dad (87) will be travelling on the Starlight Amtrak the end of march and will be stopping overnight here before continuing on to San Diego the next morning. Can someone recommend a safe, pleasant hotel that would be easy to get to from the amtrak station and return to the train station the next morning?

The only two places I know of close to the station are the Sanitarium B&B (nice maybe not what you are looking for) and a youth hostel.

Since he'd need a cab to get anywhere else - he can stay anywhere in town. What is the budget?

Nothing really that close. He would need a cab to get to the main lodging along Monterey Street. These would be within 1 mile. We visit our daughter in SLO and like to stay at La Cuesta Inn. We have also stayed at the Sands Inn. Both are nice, safe and not too expensive. La Cuesta has inside hall ways and an elevator.
