San Luis Obispo??

Planning a trip from LA to SF on Highway 1 in late June. We're planning on spending the night somewhere along the way. We would like to spend the night in Monterey, but some have said that that is a very long 1 day drive. Some have recommended spending the night in SLO and then heading to Monterey for the day. Is this a good idea? We're looking for a more natural area than touristy, like beaches, forests, parks etc. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Pismo Beach is just south of SLO and near the 101/1 Highway.

Lots of people spend the night in Cambria when doing this drive--mainly to tour Hearst Castle, but you might consider it. There have been numerous postings about this drive, try a search and see what comes up. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

You might also consider staying in Morro Bay. It is just north of SLO and has a beautiful state park and bird sanctuary plus the town is a rather charming fishing village. The Inn at Morro Bay is very nice and right next to the state park. The Back Bay Inn in nearby Baywood Park is located on a quiet waterfront and is very peaceful. If you're there on a Thursday night be sure and drive to downtown SLO for the Farmers Market-it's more like a street fair with food, music etc.

San Luis Obispo is a relatively small town. Late June graduation will be over, so many college kids will be out of town. Farmers market is on Thursday night for a down home ambiance. Also the downtown mission is a pretty area. Sicamore Springs is a nice resort near by, message, spa's.

There are nice beaches at Pismo Beach and Shell Beach and some good restaurants in the area (Steamers is modern, has good food, and a fantastic view). There are plenty of beachfront motels.
We spent three nights at the Spyglass Inn recently while exploring the area and visiting Hearst Castle, and it would be fine for your purposes. It's on a cliff overlooking the ocean, and our room was surprisingly large.
SLO is more touristy and more of a place for cutesy shopping.
If you want a unique experience, check out the Madonna Inn (no relation to the singer), near SLO. It's claim to fame is its gaudy decor. Believe it or not, the men's room is a "must see." However, it is just off the highway, so it doesn't meet you "natural" criteria.
