Just cane back from San Fran on Sunday. Stayed at the Prescott Club level. They are having a great winter rate. San Fran has great public transportation; you can stay anywhere. I loved the Wharf area; yes it was touristy, but so what. It was great fun. The hotels at the Wharf all looked alike. Pick a good chain and enjoy. Ate at the Crab House; the wait staff was great; sound system was great; food was great. Postrio at the Prescott was overrated; food was good, but too much noise and expensive. Eat at the outdoor booths at the Wharf; crab, chowder, crab, chowder and more crab and chowder.

Also, the Wharf area is not bad. We were 3-4 blocks down on Columbus and liked walking to the Wharf area which was very active. If you are trying to get on the cable car, forget it from the Wharf area, it takes forever. A better bet is to take it from Union Square.

I agree with many of the posts about the wharf. It makes your average state fair seem like a high culture experience. San Fran is a great city with amazing neighborhoods in a compact area. Skip the wharf and seek digs around Union Square, SOMA, North Beach, Nob Hill - anywhere but the quadrant of 3 for $20 T-shirts, fanny packs, battery-operated cable cars and barking sea lions.
