San Francisco suggestions
Will be in San Francisco this summer a day prior to an escorted tour of California. Will do with the tour the "musts" including a bay cruise.
Want suggestion for a relaxed day on my own. Love nice houses, quaint little shops, flowers…. Save the cable cars what of my ideas is nice, safe, and easily accessible with cable car or taxi from union square-
Lombard street, Haight-Asbury, Hall of flowers or conservatory in Golden Gate Park, Castro St. at 18, the gay area, walking around Nob Hill??? Please help.

I spent a week in San Francisco last October. I took a walking tour of Victorian Homes. The tour was 2 1/2 - 3 hours long. No steep hills, saw Mrs. Doubtfire's house. Trip was about $20 - $22 dollars. Nice tour. The tour meets at the Westin St._Francis Hotel. Arrive a little early and browse the lobby, very impressive!! Also, the hotel is near Chinatown; browse there before or after the tour. Call Jay at (415) 252-9485 or go to www.victoriantours.com. I think you'll enjoy it.

One of the best things about San Francisco is the dining out experience. The city is replete with world-class restaurants and "holes-in-the-wall" places which serve knock-out food for a reasonable price.
If you like the "gay" area of Castro Street, head on over to Noe Valley (really in the same general area) for some great restaurants. I don't know what kind of food you like, but Noe Valley has a smattering of Asian, Mexican, continental, etc.
You also might also consider travelling outside of SF, to Marin County, for example. Or maybe the wine country. Both are available by car, bus, taxi(!) or tour. Chinatown is a lot of fun, and lots to see in a small area. The cable cars go nearby.
There are also lots of other "touristy" things to do, but if you can stand more walking, there is a "Flower Power" tour that goes through the former hippie districts. Call (415) 221-8442

Don't knock the cable cars until you've tried them -- they're delightful!
The Conservatory in Golden Gate Park has been closed for years (windstorm damage) and won't be open any time soon. But the Park itself and the Japanese Tea Garden are always great.
You could also do a walking tour of North Beach, the Italian/Beat area -- plenty of good restaurants and coffee houses.
