san francisco (Nob Hill) public transit

This board & its posters have been very informative!

Anyways, I was wondering about the public transit in SF having
never used any public transit in USA

1. We're booked at the Grosvernor Suites on Pine street, called
Nob Hill. I checked the web and see the cable car goes there, but
this costs $2.50 per person one way.
If we(4) bought a 3-day muni pass, can we use the cable system for free?

2. Are the muni passes sold in most stores/hotel front desks? We'll up
in Pine and Nob Hill, i hear there is a Cala supermarket, would they have
them?

3. alternatively, are there muni buses or street cars that stop on
Pine where Governor House is? None of us are used to walking on hilly
streets, and I've got an older person in the family so advice.

4. Instead, of doing the Grayline city tour, I was thinking of maybe
taking the appropriate buses/cable cars and doing a 3 hour tour and
stopping at the right places. Anyone done this and can point me to
any web links that have the right buses to take from Nob Hill to do this?

I see a lot of info on the web, but still find it somewhat difficult
to trace through all the maps to find out what is right there where
I'd be staying....

As usual, many thanks!

Those who are more familiar with details such as you ask for will respond on Tuesday, but in the meantime, here is its website:

http://www.grosvenorsuites.com/

There's topics to click on at the bottom of its homepage...be sure to do that.

Here's a website for a "clickable" map of San Francisco.
Click on any of the neighborhoods and they will appear in great detail.

Here's the OFFICIAL public transportation to the Bay Area Public Transportation System.
The Bay Area consists of 9 different counties....ignore all but that which says San Francisco which is in San Francisco County. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of your screen to read about budget helping options.

Also, many people who live and work in San Francisco rely on public transit and private taxi cabs to get around the city as it is just miserable to drive in. So, don't forget the option of taxis....much like New York City.

When are you going to SF? Already been?
I just returned. SF is a good place to use public transportation. Taxis aren't too expensive since things are nearby..and between buses and taxis you should be able to get around reasonably. The several day passes can be a deal if you plan to really get around..I think (check on this) you can use it for the cable car. Trying to park downtown is expensive and a hassle..NOT having a car is a plus there.

Looking at the map on the Grosvenor Suites site, it looks like the property is close to the Fairmont Hotel, which is at 950 Mason. The cable car stops at the back of the hotel, which has a pharmacy/convenience store on the ground floor. You can buy a three-day MUNI passes in there; you also might enjoy having tea in the afternoon at the hotel; it's a nice treat. Have stayed twice in SF and used MUNI pass for both cable cars and buses. Hope this is helpful.

anne - Greyline also offers a $15 per person trolley tour that continually loops around the city. You can hop on and off at any point and rejoin at your convenience. The ticket is good all day, and I would guess that this would be easier than using public transit.

Just a word about the Cable Car system... although the experience of riding is fun, you should not expect to use the cars for regular transport...when they leave the turnaround at the wharf, they are usually jammed with tourists...very few leave the car at the early stops(ie Nob Hill), so getting on and off may be difficult and you may have to wait more than one or two cars to get your party on... ride the Cable Cars for the fun of it...not the transport
