san francisco nightlife

My sister and her husband are going to San Francisco in May and are wondering which is the best area to stay for restaurants and nightlife. They are in their 40's. I thought Union Square but anyone have any suggestions?

I prefer Union Sq. since its so well located... both big name hotels and boutique ones. Check other postings on this site. Do be sure and go to the Top of the Mark Hopkins hotel on Wed. night to see LaVay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet lickers play live swing, jazz etc... its a great room with a fantastic view, and lots of fun dancers in period clothing are "camp followers".....
